Hi. Is this type of plug OK with an Atwood water heater to replace the nylon plug? Seems more convenient then keeping a stock of nylon plugs. I don't have a good grasp of the galvanization thing.

When someone tells you to buy the same rig they own, listen, they might be right. When they tell you to buy a different rig then they own, really pay attention, they probably know something you don't.

That style of drain plug is used on the transom of boats. I doubt if that would be a good choice for a water heater.

No it is a Poor choice! Use the OEM Plugs ! They are cheap and Work Properly! A New one every year is cheaper than a Cup of Coffee!

I installed one of those on my Atwood, but I'm receiving conflicting information about it. Some have told me it will cause a problem with the threads. But they are sold in RV supply stores (not that that is any guarantee of anything.)
Has anybody had any problems with one like this?

The threads are National Pipe threads. Whether you use plastic, brass, or steel, they all will work.

About the only way your going to mess up the threads is over-tightening. After you put Teflon tape on just tighten until you feel too much resistance. Or, fill the heater with water and tighten until it stops dripping.

My big problem with those is that you cannot flush the tank- you can drain the water, but the crud stays in.
The plug the OP posted would last until you turned the water heater on.
