Having just spent 6 weeks traversing the US East to West, I can say that the vast majority of Verizon signal outside major metro areas is 3g. And in the more remote areas the 3g is often weak due to fewer towers, and the fact that a lot of campsites seem to be in the bottom of a gully!

That said, the service was pretty good overall, and I agree that 4g capability is better.

I am no willing to give up my unlimited 3G card. The 4G service is not available here. This card is limited to 5 gigs. We use more then that very quickly with the number of computers we have.
Sure 4G connects to 3G towers but we don't gain any speed or benefits.
I use the 3G card through a Cradle point router here at the house. Daughter and wife use the 4G card connected directly to computer for college work part of the time. When we are on the road, daughter uses 4G card here at house and we use the 3G and router.

I was thinking 3g because the area where I am going to use it does not have 4g, but if 4g can be used in 3g area I would go 4g. The link worked fine I will check it out. How much data are you guys using on a average per month. I know everyone is different just trying to get an idea.

Check out http://www.millenicom.com/ - they offer no-contract month-to-month service on both the Verizon and Sprint networks with an effective monthly limit of at least 20gb/month for $70 a month. The 3G/4G hotspot plan is the one we have - it's on the Verizon network. We've been using it for a couple of months now, and it works at least as well as the old Verizon 3G plan we dropped. One of these days we may even meander into a 4G service area and see how that part works. (We'll be in the Astoria area next week, so no 4G for us yet!)

Before we dropped Verizon for Millenicom, we were running around 9gb a month. Millenicom doesn't meter usage, so I don't know what we're using now, but it's probably about the same.

I checked the Mellenicom web site and they show no coverage for the area I would be wanting to use it...

If Verizon has coverage, then the Millenicom 3G/4G hotspot will have coverage. Millenicom is a Verizon broadband reseller.

I was just going by Millenicom's site and put in the location where you want to check for ccverage and it says no.

Try the same coverage check on Verizon's site . . . . as you said, it may be the external antenna makes the difference between signal and no signal. Where we're parked now, our Verizon cell phones show zero bars inside the RV, and one bar outside, but with the antenna/amp our Millenicom/Verizon internet shows 3-4 bars. Admittedly, the antenna doesn't usually make THAT big a difference - usually just a bar or two.

With using the 3G/4G do you have any problems with it disconnecting often while it looks for a 4G tower while in a 3G area? (I really hope that made sense) Thanks for any info. Liz

Sometimes but usually only in areas that HAVE 4G but it is weak....there is a way to "lock" your device on 3G if this is a problem.
