We just returned from a Thousand Trails campground in Gloucester Va. and noticed ~40%+ of the sites have dogs. Lots of barking dogs…all of the time…and lots of dogs not barking and enjoying their owners.

We love dogs and have owned a few….what is considered too much barking when you go camping? We had someone with a large Shetland sheepdog puppy move in next us and it barked most of the time. We were glad to leave. It puts us into the uncomfortable situation to make a “big deal” out of it. Barking dogs were obviously not a top priority for the rangers. How do other campgrounds deal with barking dogs…if at all?

Yeah, a Sheltie will bark....and bark,....and bark!

I guess it really comes down to the CG, and if they get complaints. We have dogs, 8 of them, and we try to keep them quiet, as much as we can.....and we each have a water spray bottle, which the dogs are well aware of

Some CGs will ask the barking dog owners to leave, if they get to many complaints....and you may notice that they have something about it in their "rules".

Some CGs are so dog oriented, that they don't even notice barking....and expect the person who is annoyed, to leave....but that is rare.

We won't tolerate our dogs barking after the lights go out, unless someone is knocking on our door, or walking around our site.

Barking or the lack of barking can be trained to some degree, so as with most dog behaviors, the owners have a lot of the responsibility, even if barking is "just what a dog does!"

Sorry that your camping experience was ruined......better luck next time.

Too much barking for me is this:

a) after 10pm or before 8am. Nothing annoys me more than dogs barking at everything that walks by their site.

b) constant barking by a lonely animal. If you bring your pets, please don't allow the campground to become their kennel.

IMHO too much barking is any dog allowed to bark more than a few minutes. It never ceases to amaze me how people can turn a deaf ear to their animals barking. If you choose to have animals take care of them and don't allow them to infringe on your neighbors peace and quite.
Ad yes, I have owned dogs, but I did not let them disturb the neighbors.

Was at a CG recently where the couple in the MH two sites over hopped in their toad and took off for a nice dinner in a nearby restaurant... Leaving their dog behind at their site to ruin the dinners for all their neighbors.

Its a personal thing. I can't tolerate very much barking, my wife is a lot more tolerant.

Too much dog barking is any barking that can be heard by The Neighbors, unless it alerts them to a Threat To Their Life/Property.

Oh, this is a painful subject because I love dogs and enjoy having them, but nothing irritates me more than having a dog barking and all the owners do is smile like its just fine their cute little pups are driving the rest of the world nuts. Barking dogs have no place in campgrounds. They should be left at home.

I carry a Dog-Off Silencer in my pocket most of the time. Works pretty good when walking around the CG.
