You would know we are leaving in 3 days for a week long camping trip to the lake and the fridge is 48* on the inside. When it gets back to the dealer that will be 5 times back to the dealer for this one unit! Started out last summer when 5er was 2 weeks old. On our first trip the unit went to 55* and we lost a weeks worth of food. After replacing the cooling unit it worked for a while then stopped. Found insulation around fridge had gotten behind it and stopped a lot of the air flow out the top. Then back again for similar activity. Then into dealer 2 weeks ago,due to temps rising again, and had a fan set put on the fridge(dometic says it's not their fault and that is an airflow issue). IT was 94* here yesterday and the temp went to 48* when I looked at it. History on wireless shows a temp of 51*. Needless to say I am peeved at this point with no way of having it fixed by Tuesday when we leave. And yes, the thermometer is accurate. I am using a wireless thermometer, inside analog thermometer and a laser. All show within 1/2* of each other. The fridge is a Dometic 2852. I guess we will be taking extra coolers to get by this week!

We had a problem with our old fridge but got it fixed in one trip. I would look for someone else to fix it for you after giving your dealer four tries at it. However, if you are in the same spot we are in, we only have one dealer 25 miles away and the next closest one is 150 miles away, so to take the trailer there and come home twice is an all day affair.

A residential fridge that runs on propane and A/C is the way to go. All these posts from Norcold and Dometic about failing units. A bad design that just keeps on going. If mine fails I'm going residential.

If all else fails (and that model has a thermistor) go to Dinosaur Electronics website and buy their thermistor adjuster. It goes inline between the thermistor and control board and will let you adjust temps more accurately. If you have more than an inch or so between the refrig and wall of your RV, you could have a venting problem. It may need baffles installed to create an upward airflow to get rid of the heat behind the refrig. A computer fan placed low behind the refrig. might help. Good luck. We've been down the ice chest route ourselves.

Thanks for the replies. I just got home from the dealer(without 5er in tow) to 'express' my concerns. The GM told me he hadn't heard of my problem but would get it resolved. He told me he would take one out of new one if I had enough time before I left on Tuesday morning. He said that he himself was going to call Sandpiper and let them deal with Dometic. The dealer has sold over 20 of my units since I bought mine and have not had any reports from any of them. So, that may blow Dometic's opinion out of the water(as being a ventilation problem). Anyway, if I can get my relief to come in early for me, I am probably going to take him up on that offer Tuesday.

That dealer sounds like a keeper.

Bill, if you can direct me to a residential fridge that runs on propane or AC, I would be grateful. We currently have a Whirlpool that replaced a Dometic, but I have never heard of a propane/AC residential.

X2. I think the OP was mistaken here. No such thing as a residential fridge that runs on propane or AC, although I think they had propane residential units available MANY years ago.

I think your dealer should put on seminars for other dealers on how to treat there customers! Nice to hear about a "Good Dealer". Hope you get your problem resolved before your trip.

Hi Jim,
I saw on another forum where someone put one in. I think they were in Canada and the fridge was made for a hunting cabin. Maybe try camping suppliers or outfitters? I know there out there because it was a long drawn out thread about taking the old one out, lowering the step, taking out the window to get it in etc... It also makes sense that someone would make one because up in the woods or out on the plains you would need a backup fuel. I don't think Home Depot carries them though.
Here is a start: Frig elec/gas
Good luck
