IMHO, tnhey should give you a DISCOUNT for bringing extra kids!
Now how's that for the view from the other side?

Interesting post! I am on the "don't mind paying extra". Also like KOAs and appreciate the ah, frugal, people going to public campgrounds to leave a little room for the rest of us. I see how hard the owners work and don't believe most are making a killing. I am more concerned about how I am treated at the campground.

I sometimes travel alone, but I still pay the same as a family of four does in most campgrounds.
Shouldn't I be getting upset at paying for facilities I don't use?
Not something that bothers me, simply another point of view.
Excellent point.
Using that logic, all CG's should simply charge by the person, not by the space.

My wife and I snow birded with our young kids years ago in the southwest. All the public campgrounds were first come first serve, which left us in a quandary since we were traveling without an itinerary and arriving mostly in the evenings and finding a private campground in Trailer Life Directory that wasn't a 55 and over was hard to due. The trip was great but on or way home through Oregon we got charged at a private park for the kids, I said no and took my business down the road to another private park that did not charge for children. I've always been big on State, County, Corps of Engineer and Municipal/City Parks. I share the OP pain. Hans

From my perspective the issue may be more about the amount of the extra person charge than it is about the charge itself. $4 to $5 per head - regardless of age - seems reasonable, but more than that seems a bit too much given the resources that the extra person would consume. My water bill at home for family of 4 is about $7. per month. That's less than .25 cents a day, a long way from the $10.00 fee some parks charge. Just my opinion.

Well, as a family of 5 who always gets an extra charge for having the extra 1 kid. I get annoyed since we RV since it was always considered affordable. Well if CG start charging an arm and a leg, they may see a lot more empty spots instead of a full CG.

I completely understand the charge for extra people in the park. A couple of years ago we had a really hot summer and I opened my pool to kids in the neighborhood. Just from that my expences for operating the pool tripled not to mention everything they broke. Now add the electric from kids in and out of the camper all day and sewer and water. $10.00 a head is more than reasonable to me. Does the op expect a resturant to pick up the bill for members of his family over 4? Why should a CG?

Eating a restuarant compared to going to a campground are two totally different things. Do you pay extra for a pizza for 5 compared to a pizza for 4, they both come with 8 slices regardless. Look at the big trend in campers, bunk houses and toy haulers with bunks in them. For a family of 4 or 5? I enjoy camping and have no problem paying an extra 5 a night, anything over I will opt for another CG.

nypatnva wrote: I would not patronize any campground whether private or public that charges extra for kids or pets or anything. Which is why we don't use Va state parks, (Va has great state parks) they charge for pets.
If charging extra is becoming the standard, then I guess my camping days are numbered.
Do restaurants charge more for 2 people to eat than 1 person ? Do gas stations charge more for 2 cars to fill up than 1? Does Ford charge more for 2 cars than 1 ? Do you pay more on toll roads if you have 3 axles rather than 2 ? Does the local tavern charge more for 2 draft beers than 1 ? If you work overtime at your job do you want more pay ? So do campground owners . We sold our campground 4 years ago . 1 family with 4 or 5 kids could and usally did cause more work than 10 campsites occupied by old retired folks ! Now before anyone goes there , we love children . Also we did charge more for any site occupied by more than 2 adults & 2 children. Also , before anyone goes there , our campground didn't have many vacancies . And most of our sites were occupied by repeat customers . My 2 cents . Jim
