1. charging per person on site (over a certain number, like 2)
2. surcharging for children.
Issue 1 is simple economics, but it smacks of gouging. I'm not buying the "more people, more staff, more toilet paper" argument. Oil refineries run on razor thin margins, not campgrounds- not at the rates I'm seeing these days.
Issue 2 is extortion.
Last place that wanted to tack on a fee for children, I walked out of- that was a long time ago, and like many others here, another big reason we don't do privately owned CG's.
I looked over the most recent Forbes 500 list of wealthiest people and didn't see a single person on the list where "campground owner" was their source of their wealth. An RV park owner's picture should be shown when you search for the ultimate example of a Small business owner. Glad you feel my rates our too high, it will keep you away from my park and I won't have to worry about you having me arrested for extortion if you feel I am charging extra for something I guess you feel should be free. I sure would hate to spend the rest of my life in prison because I charge for coffee and you think it should be free.
Quote: I still beleive that the actual cost to a CG is more than covered by those singles and twosomes that camp and use less services that not charging a FAMILY more, is warrented.
Based on your statement it seems CGs are actually over-charging singles and twosomes and are under-charging your family.

MY family consists of ME AND DH. THAT's ALL! I made a comment that the CG's were already charging more for a single or twosome camping and the extra from those charges could cover larger families.
Personally, I pay whatever charges the CG has without complaint. I merely thought that the extra charge for x amount of children was not warrented. I have NO PROBLEM with CG's making a good profit nor would I EVER suggest a lesser fee because we are only TWO people camping.
I agree that camping charges are too high these days. And it is disgusting when someone charges extra money for kids. I am also fed up with this policy because we are camping there as a family so they have to charge for those who are above 10 years old, but they charge for per person.

I guess the heart of the debate is the fee for kids "extra"?
Or is it to offset the additional cost required to accomodate the kid?

I feel that way ESPECIALLY after reading the sigs of some of these contributors and knowing the approximate value of their coaches. The fact that they are arguing over $3, $5, or even $10 is kind of a joke to me. They will throw a steak on the grill tonight worth more than that.

in general, people want use of all the cgs amenities and pay nothing for them. typical of a consumer being greedy.
tent camping in the backcountry is cheap. the minute you hit a private cg with amenities you will be charged. go figure?
pay the fees or don't go. best advice on the board so far
My wife and I have 3 kids. Typically I have found most campgrounds charge us another 4 dollars a night. I always often wondered what the extra 4 dollars goes to, but we do use more water and electric than a family of 4 would use.
I often see a CG that actually charges you more to use your a/c unit. I think that is a little crazy, but have you tried to get into a hotel or motel for under $40 a night (which is what campgrounds charge).
My issue is that next year my oldest is going to turn 18, now he is special needs and has a mind set of a 8-9 year old. Now do we pay for an adult or a child fee. I guess I will have to talk to some of the CG will go to this year and see what their policies are.

Me, I am happy to pay the rates charged by campgrounds and RV parks. I do not care if the business model has me pay extra for everyone after the first 2 or a flat rate for the site.
If I bring the dog I will pay the fee. Two years ago one of the cats decided to join us. I asked when we arrived and they said we did not have to pay for her. If there was a fee for the cat I would have paid it.
The kids are older teens now and adult sized. If I have to pay an extra adult rate for them I will.
I have never had a campground or RV Park not have their rates posted or try to add on extra fess that were not clearly posted either online or in their office.
We are a family with 3 kids, but have had other family members along on trips and paid accordingly.
My family has had a rental cottage for almost 50 years. We have a hard cap of 6 people after the first of August and a limit of 8 in June and July. People have tried to get around the cap, by saying the kids are small, so not take up extra space etc. Yeah right. In August the well water level is getting lower and every extra person is a stress on the system. A baby can wind up using as much water as an adult and has to count towards the limit.
I looked at one place (we did not stay there for other reasons) that charged guests for using their sani station. I had never heard of charging guests, but it turned out they had a holding tank system and had to pay to have it pumped out regularly.
This might have been said before but I would just 1) review the park in RVParkReview and give them a low rating and explain why and try staying at State, National and County Parks.
