Dodges are trouble free....LOL...not the ones i owned!
It doesnt matter what brand it is if the dealer has a poor service department.

I'd be trading it in at the Dodge dealer.

Had a 2011 dodge, dealer couldn't fix the a/c...hence the ford now.

A modern diesel is an extremely complex, difficult to maintain drive train.

No matter what brand you buy, expertise and technologies to maintain diesels are only found in existing heavy and medium duty truck dealers.

The vast majority of medium and heavy duty trucks have a fundamentally different duty cycle from light duty trucks used as daily drivers by individual users.

The issues being encountered are unique to the market --- and when an issue arises, because of the need to go back to the dealer (long emission warranties), you are at the mercy of the staff at the dealer.

Light duty dealers are set up to sell and service high volumes of gasoline cars --- and because they are sold in high volumes, there is a good database of knowledge both at the technicians and corporate level.

When a diesel is thrown at a Dodge, Ford, GM shop, no matter how we slice and dice the facts, it is still one out of perhaps 50 vehicles they sell and service that is diesel.

The chance of having a specialist tech that knows diesels at the dealer (as no dealer will turn away a diesel just because they don't have a cracker jack tech), is roughly 1 in 4.

For a routine job (like DPF replacement above), you are just as likely to get the tech that does the oil and battery and tire change.

In other words --- chances are for a total mismatch of skills at the dealers vs. the skills needed to even do good basic wrenching, let alone servicing a high tech piece of equipment.

Should we be surprised at these fiascoes?

Now, I'd like to see anyone tell me that the problems are unique to any major brand.

BTW, there is a reason why Toyota, Honda, etc. all decided to not market a diesel in the US market. Nissan... I will see what they do.

The stories out of VW and BMW are slightly better, but not much.

Picked up the truck from the dealer. Service manager was awesome. Took care of everything, resecured wiring harnesses and tightened hangers and told me he replaced sensor with twsited wiring. Service manager also filled my auxilliary tank with 80 gallons of diesel in addition to filling my main tank on the visit before! Wow-i was happy, I thought, for a week anyway. Read more...

Drove about 1000 miles since picking up-10 days maybe..........CHECK ENGINE LIGHT is back on again. Call my friend the service manager Friday and tells me to bring it in Saturday and he will have a car waiting for me. When I get to the dealer my friendly Taurus (earlier loaner car) is waiting for me. He gives me the keys and promises a follow up once diagnosed. Heck-the loaner car even remembers my phone and pairs with it instantly. Wonder what this is going to be NOW.....

Your phone and the Taurus have a thing going?

In bygone days when OBD first came along... a common fix for the CEL that was inexplicable was to put a piece of black electrician's tape over it.

Since you are in Texas, here are the rules:

Quote:

Four-times test

If you have taken the vehicle to a dealership for repairs:

two times for the same problem or defect within the first 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first, and
twice more during the 12 months or 12,000 miles after the second repair attempt, and
the problem is still not repaired

you pass the four-times test.

Serious-safety-hazard test

If you have taken the vehicle for repair of a serious safety hazard:

once during the first 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first, and
once more during the 12 months or 12,000 miles following the first repair attempt, and
the problem is still not repaired

you pass the serious-safety-hazard test.

30-days test

If your vehicle has been out of service for repair because of problems covered by the warranty:

for a total of 30 days or more, not necessarily all at one time, during the first 24 months or 24,000 miles, and
there were two repair attempts during the first 12 months or 12,000 miles immediately after delivery, and
a substantial problem still exists

you pass the 30-days test.

If a comparable loaner vehicle was provided while the vehicle was being repaired, that time does not count toward the 30 days.
