We always make it a stop over going across Kansas. I think Dodge City was better in the 70's than now, but we still stop. There is a Passport America park in town. Off hand, I do not know the name.
I am a big fan of Matt, Miss Kitty and the gang.

There is a tourist trap downtown, about all I saw. I wouldn't stop again.

it's a checklist stop...you know...been there/done that. there is a re-created 'front street' and that was about all. oh..a bit west of town on US50 or US56...don't recall which...you can see some original wagon wheel ruts created by the wagon trains heading west.

i wouldn't necessarily detour to get there but if you're a western heritage fan, a 'Gunsmoke' fan or if you're gonna be passing close by then i'd stop. just don't expect too much.

enjoy.

We spent a few days there last summer and enjoyed it. It is a touristy town but fun. We stayed at a park outside od town-I think it was the Gunsmoke rv park?

if you're going through there, it's worth an hour or two of your time..if you're a Gunsmoke fan or trail driving days fan. Head for the museum and get your history there because it will no doubt be hotter than pancakes on a griddle in August.

We made the stop and look a few years ago. Now when going thru Dodge City it's just to go thru. Seen it once, OK, that's enough. Nothing really spectacular. If you have high hopes of seeing really neat old west then you'll be disappointed. If your expectations are just another tourist stop then that's what you'll see.
There's a campground on the west side of Dodge City that's nice. It sits on top of a rise where you can see for quite a distance. Great view particularly if a storm is coming thru. Can see the lightening for many miles as it comes across.

If you have never seen it, I think it is worth a stop. You can probably see most everything in half a day.

I think there are only two RV Parks in town. There is a Walmart and a Flying J. If I remember correctly, the J is tight but doable towing, a lot easier if bobtail.

We like driving the US highways. Here's a link to some of the other places along US-50 in Kansas

The Gunsmoke RV park is a good one. The city itself is a BIG letdown.

Depends on your interests. It is artificial history, Tombstone on a smaller scale. I found the monument at Bent's Fort to be much more worth my time. But if you are into re-enactments it could be your thing.

Gunsmoke Trav-L-Park on the west side was adequate for an overnight.
