Hey fellow campers.I hope I didn't make a HUGE mistake by using Purple Power (aka Sodium Silica) to clean my rubber membrane roof.I used it in a 50/50 mix with water and scrubbed the roof with a brush to remove the grunge that had built up over the winter. The label said it was safe to use on rubber.Turns out though that when I rinsed it off it of course ran down the sides of the camper and over the windows and camper shell which created milky stains that I can't seem to get rid of.I tried wiping the windows with Windex and tried car wash soap but the streaks just won't go away. The aluminum skin of the camper has the stains as well.We were forced to look through ugly, milky windows all weekend. What can I do to get rid of these ugly streaks? I hope that an insurance claim can be avoided. Thanks for your valued advice.-Andy & Linda.

Try SNO BOL toilet cleaner on the glass portion. It worked for me in a similar mess. Not sure about the sides I think rubbing compound and elbow grease would be best on the painted surfaces.

Probably not the best thing to use on an RV! Seriousily!

MSDS for Sodium Silicate-

"Slightly corrosive to corrosive in presence of steel, of aluminum, of zinc, of copper. Extremely hazardous in case of skin contact (corrosive, irritant, causes severe burns), or ingestion, or inhalation."

"Neutralize the residue with a dilute solution of acetic acid"...which is industrial full strength Vinegar. Try some White vinegar diluted with water to clean the residue on your windows and RV. You may have to re-wax afterwards.

Don't use anything on your roof except water, Murphy's oil Soap or diluted bleach for stains or mold.

Purple Power MSDS...

Thanks for the warning. Right or wrong I'm of the persuasion that don't try to out-think the engeneers of the roof. Clear water to rince off the desert dust is all I'll use..... IMO...

I actually spoke to a "detailer" at a campground last week and asked what he was using and he said "Purple Power", but he did confess he had to be very careful regarding it contacting the decals, windows, etc. and he also stated he used some other spray bottle with vinegar to wipe off any mistakes, so that may be the correct path. He said he was going back to using "Jolt", once done with the rig he was on.

But I bet it cleaned up your roof really good!

I use the same car wash soap I use for the sides to clean the roof with..

Sure, my roof is not as white as it was when it was new, but it cleans up good enough for me and to where it does not leave the dreaded 'black streaks' down the sides of the trailer when it rains..

For the glass, I'd try solvents in stages to see what finally works.. Up to using MEK if necessary! I would hope that simple Mineral Spirits would do the job, but I have no idea what that stuff is you used...

Good luck!

Mitch

If your windows are tempered glass, the Purple Power may have "etched" them. If so, it may be that the etching can be polished off the glass with VERY FINE jeweler's rouge or something.

On edit

"Cerium oxide" is the polishing compound used for glass, not jeweler's rouge.

I have used Swirl and Scratch Remover on my RV windows... cleans them really good. I think it's made by Turtle Wax and probably bought it in WalMart. It gets the milky rubber streaks off from the roof. I put it on lightly and then wipe it off with a clean cloth.
