Are you priming it from inside as well as out?

Look for a broken wire at the genset connector or behind the switch inside.
Onan? Check fuse on side of genset.

Priming should not make a difference since it doesn't crank over from inside switch I THINK-If fuse was bad it wouldn't shut genny down-I will search for broken wire -bad ground and since it shuts genny down from inside I think switch is good-Rich

Bad switch or loose wire. I'd pull the inside switch out of the panel and make a connection manually to see of the switch is bad or if it's the wire leading to the switch.

This way, if it starts, you know to replace the switch...and that wires are good.
Just because it will shut-down from inside, doesn't mean the switch is good.....

My 98 Dutch Star does the same thing. Some times it works just fine,
but every now and then it won't start from inside.
So I'll be watching to see the answer.
Thanks
Don

I had the exact same problem and spend a good amount of time checking the wiring and dash switch. No problems found.

Turned out that the connector inside the genset has really thin copper leads from the connector down to the circuit board of the control board. They are easily corroded and open circuit. The fix was to move the wire in the connector down to the next spot (it's empty), and to solder a jumper from terminal 3 to terminal 4 on the board. Terminal 4 isn't used in my rig so it was easy to do. Saved a few hundred. Naturally, I cleaned and coated all the the other leads while I was working on the control board.

Oh, wait. You're saying that you just couldn't hear it running? Well, then, just forget what I said.
