Tacoma or Frontier would be a good fit for the TT numbers you are looking at. Payload will still be the killer regardless of what you choose.

We towed the TT in my sig with a Tacoma. Pulled it fine but we realized we were over on payload. It was a great truck with our previous Hybrid.

User cpeters here has a similar rig pulled by a Frontier and may be able to shed real world experiences.

I wouldn't go over 3500lbs loaded. From personal experience with an 06 frontier. Same HP/TQ and it struggled with 4050lbs loaded. Main problem is lack of power for hills/mtns and the large frontal area just kills the truck. On flats it's just ok, but even the slightest inclines it shifts to 3rd. MPG was 7-8. I moved to an F150 and it was a perfect match.

I owned a new LUV Mikado and a Frontier. For towing no dice. I towed 16 foot boats with them. They were at max capacity with that. Both great run around pickups, fun to drive.
Duramax now after a 454 extracb.
Best buy for you is a V8 Titan , Ford Eco Boost, or GMC HEAVY DUTY half ton at minimum.
Or a tent trailer.

I know the OP was looking for a new truck, but maybe consider a really nice used first generation Toyota Tundra. They are V8 powered, can tow 7000#, ride very nice, and are about the size of the current Tacoma.

The term "trucks" is getting pretty vague. Vehicles with a 5 foot and shorter beds are hardly "trucks". Some one has to come up with a new name.

Not to be weight police or anything but 6k or 7k of trailer will be much better handled by a fullsize truck.

In a later post the OP said he was looking at towing a 20' trailer with a GVWR of around 4600 lbs. I think he was asking about a towing capacity of 6-7K to give some reserve capacity. I think you'll agree that a Frontier is a good match for a trailer of that size.

Best thing to do is to get wo 4x8 sheets of plywood, stack them length ways on top of each other, put them behind the cab, throw a yard of gravel in the bed of the truck, head for the hwy and take tranny out of OD. If you like that you'll like towing 4000lbs of TT.

I think you lost me somewhere, unless I didn't get the joke. How is hauling 2800 lbs. in the bed like towing a 4000 lb. travel trailer? A 4K TT is pretty small, should be no problem at all for a truck with 261 hp. I used to tow a similar trailer with a 160 hp V6 Ford Aerostar and while it was no super speed demon it pulled it just fine and easily maintained 45 up the Cascade mountain passes.

If it doesn't have to be a truck, the Jeep Grand Cherokee with the diesel engine was rated to tow around 7100-7200# a few years ago, but watch the hitch weight and payload before you buy.
