I was servicing a mower deck and snapped a head off a screw holding a shield onto the mower deck. I drilled out the center of the screw and started wrenching in a screw extractor. Unfortunatly, the screw extractor broke flush with the screw. There is nothing I can grip with pliers. I tried to drill the screw extractor but I'm having a terrible time drilling through it even with a new titanium bit.

Has this happened to anyone before? What do I do next?

(Mr Moderator: I realize this does not have much to do with RVs so if you must delete it, I'll understand. However, some very wise minds read ths forum, I'm in a pickle, and I'm hoping for a suggestion or two. I have nowhere else to turn right now.)

Moderator comment: You have a good question but this is the wrong forum for it. This forum is for "Modifcations and Upgrades". Repair and maintainence posts should go in the "Tech Issues" forum. I will move this one there.

Ouch.

Can you get to it with a 4" angle grinder , cut the screw head off, then drill & tap it for a new screw?
Catch the screw head with a cold chisel and either cut it off or try to rotate it out?
Cut a slot in the screw head (and easy out) with a Dremel and use a hand impact driver on it?

drilling it out will be hard to do as it is as hard or harder than most drill bits...on the farm we have welded a nut onto the end of it to back it out..

best of luck..

Thanks, all... Looks like I'm in a bad situation. The screw extractor is broken inside the screw flush with the mower deck - nothing to grab. I'm having no luck trying to drill a hole in the screw extractor. I may need to take it to a shop if I can't figure this out but moving a 200# mower deck isn't easy for me to do anymore.

a diamond burr in a dremel to make a new hole for an ez out, try to find a left handed ez out.
left handed? one with the flutes going back-wards to bite the broken extractor and remove it. don't remember what the real name is?
that must have a large screw?

Back in the day, same thing on a flat head Dodge head bolt, extractor broken off inside the bolt. Rented a magnetic drill press and bought diamond tipped drill bit. You might look into it.

Heat and cool and then drill or weld a nut as said above.

Sounds like you may be in cutting torch territory. I would just blow out the entire screw assembly and weld a new nut onto the deck and use a new bolt. Hopefully you are working on your equipment and not someone else's.

Grab the other end of the screw with Vice Grips on the bottom side of the mower deck, then screw it on through the deck.

Last time I had the problem I used a Dremal tool to cut a slot in the broken off screw (yes it did cut out further than I wanted but no choice) used a torch to heat and then used a slotted screw driver and pliers to help turn the screw driver while pressing down hard.

It worked after everything else I tried would not.
