Cbones,

I don't understand. How does that 'Battery Maintainer' work?

It is essentially a diode, a fuse, and a long wire. You connect it to the positive post on the toad battery and run it to the positive hot post on the MH trailer plug. Obviously it needs to have a connector someplace between the coach and the toad. I used a 6 wire plug connector on my toad, so I had the room to just run it thought the 6 wire connector. If you only have a 4 wire connector on the toad, just run it thought its own connector. When it is all connected, power can flow from the coach to the toad, but power will not be able to run backwards from the toad to the coach. Additionally the wire will also have its own 20 amp fuse protection. You could make the same setup, but for me it is cheap enough, and it is already nicely assembled.

You will not have problems if you connect the MH chassis battery and the toad battery, 12 gauge wire, 25 amp fuse on each end.

I don't understand this - I think it's bad advice. A 12 AWG wire is rated to carry 20 amps, so why fuse with a 25 amp fuse? The wire is going to get very hot, probably cook the insulation, before the fuse blows. I would fuse with a 15 amp fuse or even smaller, depending on the expected current draw. If I am wrong, please tell me why.

I added new light bulbs to Liberty taillights and after a couple years added a charge wire to battery from 12vdc from generator start solenoid. It would not charge. checking new wire to ground on Jeep there wasn't much voltage. I had to also add a dedicated negative wire from MH to Jeep to allow current to flow. So remember if you add a wire you may have to add 2. just a FYI.

I suspect you are correct and there have been good comments about installing a trickle charge properly, so thanks for the info.

I have been accused of reinventing the wheel

OK, but if someone did not try new things we would be typing on actual type writers and traveling the country in covered wagons pulled by horses

Anybody have any additional insight to a 6 watt solar charger to keep toad battery charged?

Dan, 6 watts will only "maintain" you car battery, if there are no excessive loads computer, radio memory, etc. It will NOT charge a battery, but will keep it from getting much lower, if it is not charged.

You lost my interest on the 'adding' a diode. No adding more diodes for me. It's been suggested that the diodes for the tail lights are what is eating my alternators every couple of months in the toad.

Thats because they did not know what was killing them, or that they were not the best alternators to begin with. A diode is an electrial check valve, voltage will go only one way through it. Or, it can be used as a high speed electrical switch.
