That sounds like one of my biggest fears while camping and that is why we don't go on the holidays (I usually work anyway). We usually try to hit the more popular campgrounds right before the main season hits when the activities are running but most kids have 1 more week of school (1st week of June) We are heading to Luray VA to Jellystone and are doing a Monday thru Friday which I'm hoping will be less crowded. If we do go on a weekend I try to stay from Sat-Monday because on Sunday evening most pull out for home and we have the campground to just the few of us left.

Your experience is why many public parks have "no alcohol allowed" policies. We often enjoy a beer or two while camping there and have never been hassled by park personnel. It does give them a way to control the campers and bounce anyone who gets out of line.

The remarks by others is what we have learned full-timing the past 8 years, when we took our "Dream Trip" we were very, very careful to ensure we were in a 55+ rv park over 4 of July in the States ... in fact the one 4th of July with the least amount of noise, partying, etc. was just North of Belleville, Ontario ... ha ha.
I know I know, not really fair, but there were lots of fireworks over the First of July. Understand that since we are volunteering that we should enjoy the times between now and 4th of July here in Charbonneau Campground, Washington State.

I call these amature weekends. Go midweek with the pros. Or at least the weekend before or after the holiday.

I agree with "Go Dogs". We live near Lake Marion (the beautiful lake you cross on I-95 in South Carolina). Locals know to stay off of the lake on holidays.
Camped at Santee State Park Memorial weekend and it wasn't bad at all though.

We almost always camp on Memorial weekend, Labor Day weekend and Fourth of July week because it's hard for my DH to get time off from work. We've had very few weekends that were ruined by crowded, drunk campgrounds. Mostly we find great, friendly and interesting people from all over - which is one of the things we love about camping. That said, when we tent I never get a very good night's sleep because the sounds are different in a tent then at home - something I have trouble with. We always use the trailer when camping on weekends (my DH won't tent camp).
Here's what helps us ensure a great weekend anytime:
- I read as many reviews from different websites as possible before booking a campground. A favorite is http://www.rvparkreviews.com/
- I look for private campgrounds that have strict policies and reviews that back that statement up. Sometimes I'll ask what repercussions are for out of control campers when I book the site (also about dogs off leash which drives me crazy).
- We often stay in state parks which are patrolled by rangers and have bathhouses cleaned 2-3x per day.
- I look at the campground website map in a window next to a google satellite map to get an idea of how much space there really is between sites and to get a batter idea of the location of our site.
- We complain to a manager if somebody is really out of hand - and keep complaining until they do something about it (has happened only twice in seven years of camping).
If we could camp midweek or for long weekends not on the holidays we would. That just isn't an option for us, so we're careful about how we go about booking sites. We also know how to have a great time even when things aren't great - hey, we're camping and together as a family!!

You don't go "camping" at KOA, that is parking. Like most private parks, the sites are just way too close. Bad neighbors can happen anywhere however. Plan further out and go to a state or federal park.
