We have a few more days left of our maiden voyage and have started to plan our next trip which will be in late October. Below are what I am seeing as pros and cons of each one. Hopefully members that have been to both of these will chime in.
Topsail
Pros - shade trees
walking distance to beach (at least for us - we like to walk)
Cons - distance - 100 miles further
Gulf Shores
Pros - 100 miles closer to home
Cons - have to drive to beach
no shade trees (at least it does not look like there are shade
trees using Google Satellite.

For me the beach and water quality would make the decision easy. Topsail for sure. The water is crystal clear and clean and the white sand beaches are the best.

Our site at Gulf State Park was closer to the beach than our site at topsail. If you actually want to swim in the ocean Topsail would get my vote, but if you're a pool person Gulf State Park wins. You really can't lose at either park. Enjoy!
Time to camp.

Gulf Shores
1 Don't have to fight traffic.
2 CAN drive to the beach.
3 Mid October = Alabama Shrimp Festival.
I like Topsail too but Gulf Shores just seems more relaxing to me.

Gulf State park it depends on what site you have how far the walk to the beach is. It could be any where from about 250 yards to nearly 1.5 miles. The park pool is nice.

Will the pool be open and will the water temp be to cold around October 21>27? I am an ocean guy, but the DW is a pool person. The water right now at Topsail has some seaweeds in it. We really enjoyed just laying at the edge of the water in our chairs.

I wouldn't let 100 miles difference be a factor or a pool. Topsail would be my choice with its gorgeous beach and beautiful tropical atmosphere with the trees and shrubs. Having been there twice, it was maticulously maintained both times.
Just giving you an opinion from a real beach lover.

You might want to split the difference and go to the Gulf islands Seashore Fort Pickens campground.Pick a site in loop A for shade. You can walk to the beach, but there is also a great beach with a pavilion just 3 minutes by car.

Having been to both, my choice would be Topsail. It has one of the most beautiful beaches, 3 miles of no houses or condos. Also, look at Henderson Beach, no pool, but you are right in town. One of our favorites.
