Only reliable tip for mileage improvement when towing is drive slower. Even at that, it's not going to get much better. (maybe see 10 at best?) For a 100 mile trip, it doesn't matter much.
Glad you got the smaller trailer, I doubt you would have been too happy with the tow experience with the larger trailer.
Have fun out there and USE it!

I did the same thing, 1/2 ton ford expedition towing a 6000lb trailer. It was a nightmare. It was 31 foot long. Semis constantly blowing us side to side even with wdh and sway control. Traded for chevy 2500, all the difference in world. Buy a smaller trailer or bigger truck. If you were like me you won't initially buy the smaller trailer, but you will in the future buy the larger truck! have fun. Bob

I have a 1/2 ton as well. MPG from 8.5 to 9.8 depending on wind conditions. Like bob, it's a PITA to tow. I can't change the TV now so going to a ProPride hitch.
2011 Toyota Sequoia Platinum 5.7L V8 (next will be a 3/4, someday)
2012 Jayco Flight Swift 267BHS (5963lbs dry, 6650 wet)
Propride hitch (I had a Reese dual cam round bar WDH for 4 months)

I find that opening a window in the back really helps when big rigs come up from behind. It seems to take pressure out of the trailer and doesn't sway near as bad as if the unit is air tight. We are suppose to pull out in the morning for an 80 miles run to Jellystone Park in Waller Texas. 40 to 50% chance of rain everyday this week. we may not make the trip this week.

That's a good way to fill your trailer up with road dust and grit.

I had a 5th wheel before and cracking a side window appeared to have helped when a big rig came up behind me. Now that I have this new 29' bumper pull with a Husky hitch, the sway bar made all the difference in the world. I came down from Hot Spings without any issues at all. It towed like a dream. I was told I Could tighten the sway bar to adjust for any abnormal sway but didn't need to do so.
