Highway 17 is a nice route to take and from Ottawa to Sault Ste Marie. It's about 500 miles, which makes it a pleasant 2 day drive. There are several Provincial Parks along the way. The road is two lane only. In Sudbury there is the Big Nickel Mine and Science North and in Sault Ste. Marie you have the locks and the Agawa Canyon Tour.

TC 17 from Ottawa to Mattawa is constantly under construction. Probably the worst highway I have ever driven on. Ontario also has some of the most ignorant highway construction crews in Canada. Expect long delays.

If this is going to be your only trip to Ontario you might want to think about moving off of TC 17 so you can take in Algonquin and Killarney Provincial Parks - these are two of the more spectacular Provincial Parks in the province. They don't represent a huge deviance from your planned route - and would add immeasurably to the enjoyment of your trip. Algonquin is huge - lot os campgrounds and campsites. Killarney is a pristine jewel with only 1 campground. Both are busy - do your research and make reservations.
Going up along the Ottawa River is a great tour. The Rocky Mountain in Renfrew is a great restaurant for Schnitzel. Pembroke has murals painted on the sides of many of their downtown buildings. The Pembroke public lighting dept has a nice museum of former things. They were one of the earliest to have street lights. Riverside Park CG is on the Ottawa River looking across to Quegec province. Next is Petawawa with a military museum at CFB Petawawa that is free. Deep River is also a place of Atomic Energy Canada. They have a large place there with a visitor area. I think tours are a thing of the past but I remember standing on top of a nuclear reactor on a tour. I have always want to stop at Science North, maybe this year.

Until now my trip was planned out to Michigan, but no return trip planned homeward. Well, I may go back the way I came.
I'm a recently retired truck driver, so slow and easy, and see things I missed when driving for a company. No Dispatchers, No appointment times, No Rush.
