can't make a personal opinion without hands on use
reading a review only gives you the reviewer's opinion
since my windows 7.. laptop is 16 months old I won't be getting a new one for a few more years
to many other expenses

I've played with it a bit, but I guess you really have to like smart phone type manipulation to like the new Metro interface. It pretty much leaves me cold. Too much interaction with "the cloud". If I wanted a dumb workstation, I'd buy one. I prefer to have my "stuff" local, not dependent on internet connection.

It appears that Win 8 is mainly designed for touch screen applications and not for standard PC's.
I would stick with Win 7 for a long time. Some folks even still use Win XP and are reluctant to go to Win 7.
Imagine using a touch screen and eating chocolate candy at the same time, OOOH sticky.

I never even thought of that!
I am one of those still w/ Win XP on a 2004 hp pavillion a620n that, since I am retired, does all I need and w/ only 512k ram. It is plenty fast for browsing (now 90% of what I do), and my recent switches to all normal settings as regular sighted people would use EXCEPT high contrast black windows classic appearance and DPI at 200% display settings, and the Blank Your Monitor (like NASA night launch) firefox add-on for firefox -- all amount to making my pc seem new and more readable to my bad eyes than any computer ever (and I have been staring at 'em since 1975!).
I was drawn to android after seeing Martha's dark background, white print screens, as well as the cool touch features. But, whether phone or tablet, I cannot really see the small screens well.
I had been hoping the large tiles and maybe larger tablets coming w/ the Win 8 launch would ;et me in on some of this new stuff, but the more I see it and think (like some of you say about touch and icloud things), the more I figure my setup here is about all I really do need.
Your opinions have helped.
Mr. Wizard, you likely know can look ay Win 8 on your pc w/o messing it up or committing PC World art . My pc likely won't be up to it.

It's neat, but the Metro UI is for touch applications. That being said, you can shut off the MUI and use it just like 7 or any other flavor. I've been running it in a VM for a few months now and it seems about the same as 7 overall.

I keep getting popup or bars saying this site no longer works with IE7 click here to upgrade toIE8. I haven't done it and yet to find a site that doesn't work with IE7.

Sounds like you're getting redirected via an infected script.

It has been widely reported that IE 7 is not supported on some new sites, and IE 8 will follow at some point in time. It really isn't a big deal to casual users, mainly the pages will not display and operate as the designer intends, but usually the page will open and work fine. You might miss some special features, but for surfing, probably not a problem. IE (internet explorer) is not the same as Windows 7 or Windows 8 Windows is the operating system that actually runs your computer, IE is just the browser that opens and displays internet sites. I am going to shy away from Windows 8 until the first service pack (that is French for the software updates that fixes all the problems the initial release will have). Once service Pack 1 for Windows 8 is released it will be time to learn yet another operating system. Much as I hate trying to keep up with technology, I can honestly say my Windows 7 operating system is sure a lot better than Vista or some of the earlier releases. We sometimes get people in who are still running Vista or Gosh forbid, XP or even Win2000 and the wifi connection is next to impossible and of course it is our fault. Those old operating systems and the machines that are running them are just not adequate today. Snooze you lose.
