RT 15 from NY to Meriden CT is no trucks or RV's but the OP won't go anywhere near there. The only way to get from I91 north to I84 east is to take RT 15 over the Charter Oak bridge.
Depending on what time of day your traveling through, I84 will get pretty congested in the Danbury area as well as the Waterbury area. If you can avoid the rush hours you could be through both those areas in about 30 minutes.
