Is there any way to get mobile internet without signing up for any kind of contract with any company? That really depends on your friend’s situation and current phone. For example, if your friend is a part-time RVer and if your friend has a Verizon or AT&T smartphone, he/she may be interested in the following, which requires a cell phone contract but not an internet access contract.
I use the Verizon Hotspot feature, but I believe AT&T has a similar plan. The Hotspot feature is ideal for the part time RVer. Verizon’s Hotspot feature turns an iPhone and certain other smartphones into a portable wireless router that can share its internet connection with up to five other devices. I’ve found the service amazingly fast, and I’ve traveled all over the country and have always had service.
The Hotspot feature costs $20 per billing cycle, but you only pay a prorated amount for the days that you have the feature active. If you don’t turn it on at all during a billing cycle, it costs nothing. Also, you can turn it on and off as often as you want from the My Verizon app or web page.
There’s no activation fee and the time you’re connected doesn’t count against your regular plan’s minutes. You are restricted to 2GB of data per month (prorated to the number of days of use). That’s should be enough data unless you watch a lot of video. So far, I’ve never exceeded that amount. (You can monitor your Hotspot usage via the My Verizon app or web page.) Read more here.

I use Virgin Mobile, Usually meets my needs. 10/20/50 month depending on what you want from them
T-Mobile now offers a simular deal, same prices, more data
I'm told AT&T does but have not researched.
All the Pay then play plans require you buy your own adapter,
USB dongle around 60-80 bucks, My-Fi about 150..
Prices fairly consistant as well.

Currently testing a compay called Tru connect. It sets up with a mifi device and you pay for the usage. Works off of Sprint's 3G network. It all depends how much surfing and downloading you do to find out if it's for you. It is not dependent on a cell phone.

Does anyone use the Walmart Internet to go? They advertise a hot spot for $120, and refills for $25, which will roll over as long as you use it once a year, but I cannot find any kind of rates, whether it is daily or monthly, etc.

The Walmart add that I have for it states: "Balance never expires if used once a year"
However it doesn't say what $25 buys you in usage. Also check for coverage on their site. They indicated no coverage in my ZIP code (which was surprising).

Where on the WalMart site can you find the "internet to go" info?
I used that in their search field and came up with nothing.

Try "Internet on the Go"
Check the cards for the ZIP code coverage.

Unless you want to use it one month, not the next, turn it on a few months later, turn it off, etc.
The last time I checked, they charged a hefty fee each time you reactivated it.
