We are on the road in Lincoln Nebraska and this happened. The tire pressure monitor never showed overpressure or overheat.

Did damage to the side of the camper too.

Looks like it is still holding air... A TPM will not help a defective or overloaded tire.

Tread can come off of a defectve tire without losing air, or getting hot. Just a bad tire throwing tread. I couldn't tell the brand, but I would go and get some good tires. In the mean time keep the tire and sent to manfacture, and show them the damage. They should pay for the damage their tire caused.

I lost the rubber, the complete thread area on a Trans Am that I was driving fast on the interstate. Actually the ring of thread passed me and that was the only reason that I knew I had a problem. The tire was still fully aired and I continued (at a much slower speed) about 12 miles to a tire shop and replaced the tire.

Monitoring systems do not detect tread seperation, only pressure and temperature.

we recently returned home from a 3-month trip. the final leg was on I-65 NB between indianapolis and chicago. i've never seen so many tire 'alligators' in the travel lanes and on the shoulders as i did on that stretch of I-65. so much so that i now refer to I-65 as 'Alligator Alley'.

Just for the heck of it I did a bit of research... The "Centennial" is a tire manufactured by Dunlop (perhaps others also named their tire this - who knows?). I did find the following reference to a RECALL of certain Centennial tires - whether or not the recall includes the OP's tire type and size ...??? We all know that certain Michelin tires were / are being manufactured in China - I was wondering about this one.

Recall #1 Issued: 1977 09 27
This 9999 CENTENNIAL TIRES HR7815 recall affects the TIRES Manufactured by DUNLOP TIRE & RUBBER CORP
Description Of Defect
THE INVOLVED TIRES FAIL TO MEET THE HIGH SPEED REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 109, "NEW PNEUMATIC TIRES". THESE TIRES MAY DEVELOP TREAD OR BELT SEPARATIONS DUE TO INADEQUATE ADHESION PROPERTIES OF THE STEEL REINFORCING BELTS, IN COMBINATION WITH TIRE TEMPERATURES GENERATED AT SUSTAINED HIGHWAY SPEEDS.

Looks like "INADEQUATE ADHESION" as in the recall so why blame the TPMS. It did not detect a over pressure or heat because there was not any.

This post is my opinion (free advice). It is not intended to influence anyone's judgment nor do I advocate anyone do what I propose.
