I wil be up graging from a TT to a 5er next Monday. I will not disclose the size make or model to avoid turning this into a weight police tread. But I just wanted to see what kind of advice the old pros out there would give on hooking up and hauling a 5er for the first time and what to watch out for. I do have a class A cdl so heavy hauling is not new to me and I have a DOT map and have planned my route to avoid steep hills.

Be sure to swing wide when you turn corners. The pivot point on a fifth wheel is in the center of your truck bed, versus on/near the bumper.

Take it slow and easy. This is a big box that is not very forgiving. You and your wife need to learn together and become a trusted team. Outsider help will fail you most of the time.

Have fun and I hope it is not too long. Bigger is not better.

Good luck with your new 5er... Just remember the basics and since you already have your class A , you should be ok to go at at !! ( I hope ) ... Remember to do your pre trip , DO NOT high hitch , make sure you allow the pinbox to ride up your hitch...Remember the pivot point is different than that of your TT , it will back up differently but you will get used to that..

That new 5er is definitely too light for your truck.

1- Make sure you have at least 5 1/2 inches from your bed top rail to the 5th wheel and the 5th wheel is level.

2- Make sure your truck and hitch is rated for the 5iver weight and is greased.

3- Make sure your brake unit is set right to stop the 5th wheel

4- Check to see if the 5th wheel will hit your cab on a hard turn

5- Make sure you know when the 5th wheel has passed someone.

Good luck!

we bought a 5er 2 weeks ago never owning one. we had no troubles. just listen to the service guys when they walk you thru the hitch set up and unload etc.

it pulls fine. that 'chucking' is weird. but people on the board explained it to me so I felt more at ease. first big 'chuck' freaked me out

other than knowing the steps to hitch and unhitch, there isn't any other secrets that we have learned. it is fast, easy vs. the TT we owned and no problems so far.

ENJOY that new 5er!!!
