Ventura Cnty changed the rules, set fines, and finally gave rangers teeth to enforce the rules. The game playing for reserving and keeping a spot has changed for the better. We have driven by on the last two weekends Saturdays both and noted a few open sites. Being said your best bet is to arrive mid week mid day. Personally I don't see the allure. There are hookups and less vehicle traffic and noise at Faria and Hobson. Ventura Campgrounds w video

Yes. My point is it's not impossible to find an spot there, most days of the week in the summer.
It's not impossible, but the moral of this is that Sunday is the emptiest day of 7, and there were only 6 spaces available when you went through. Either way, there is NEVER a guarantee that there WILL be space on any given day during the summer, and that's the way it's been for years.
