I am heading out this weekend, and just looking for some peace of mind. I will be pulling a 23 foot 1979 Nomad that weighs about 5500 lb loaded with a 2001 chevy extra cab silverado z71 5.3 v8 with 3.42 gear. Does this sound like an overloaded situation? I am using a weight distributing hitch and a single friction sway control. Thanks This will be the first trip for this combo.

Sounds like your well within the limits of the truck & the hitch setup is fine.

I think you'll be fine too.. Don't be surprised if you have to downshift into a lower gear more often than you are used to and that it will take longer to get going and coming to a stop.. But, that's what comes with towing a TT, so it'll be 'normal'.

It might take you several trips with the rig to get the feel for it and to learn what the truck likes and does not like. Where it's 'sweet spot' is and the like.. I've been towing my rig for 10 years now and while I pretty much know it now, it took me a year or 2 to really dial it all in..

Good luck and have fun!

Mitch

Depending on terrain you should tow in 3rd rather than try to tow in Drive. Your vehicle will be no powerhouse with the 342.1 rear ratio however if your towing is mostly level to small hills your TV should be adequate.

Don't try climbing long hills with your foot to the floorboard. Let the truck downshift and stay in the right lane.

Yep I plan on using tow haul and third and goin about 60-65. I have already found that when pulling my car trailer and street stock dirt car that the 5.3/3.42 gear combo doesnt have the balls that my old 90 gmc with 5.7 and 3.42's had. Thanks again for the advice .

That should not be a problem rig. Enjoy your "peace of mind" as it happens I'm headed out at 11am for the weekend myself.

Keep overdrive locked out. Expect plenty of time in second gear climbing. Keep the torque converter locked up as often as possible. Enjoy the trip!
