I am heading out this weekend, and just looking for some peace of mind. I will be pulling a 23 foot 1979 Nomad that weighs about 5500 lb loaded with a 2001 chevy extra cab silverado z71 5.3 v8 with 3.42 gear. Does this sound like an overloaded situation? I am using a weight distributing hitch and a single friction sway control. Thanks This will be the first trip for this combo.

You'll be fine. I tow a lot more trailer than what you are towing and I have a 3.42 gear in my Silverado also. I use overdrive with cruise control when in flat country and I cruise along at 60 to 65 mph at around 2,000 rpms. When it gets hilly and the transmission starts hunting for a lower gear then I take it out of drive and put it in 3rd gear.

All went well, Kinda struggled a bit on the hills, but once we got close to the outer banks we cruised along about 65 no worries. Gonna get a better sway control hitch and some workin trailer breaks before next trip in August. Thanks again.
