If you ignore the trinket hawkers and other tourist traps and focus on the natural beauty, yes it's worth the drive. Other than natural beauty Sedona is a carnival atmosphere. IMO..

Have been there many times - did the "Uptown" area - kinda - once and that was enough of high end tourist trap.

BUT, that being said, it is some of the most beautiful area for hiking and photo shooting you will find.

We stay at Distant Drums along I-17 in Camp Verde; as do many other fairly frequent visitors. The rv park in town is very cramped - especially for a 5th wheel - and pricey; just not worth the hassle IMHO.

Ok. Only apply the bulldozers to the tourists. I guess what I didn't get across is that it's a beautiful area -- but too many people hanging around that "uptown: area. And all those glitzy Rodeo Avenue shops. We have rented Jeeps there and done the back country. It would have been a world class place to go 50 years ago before all the development. Arizona blew it by not making it a state park. IMHO as they say.
Huh??? Just about the total red rock area is within the Coconino National Forest. There is Tuzigoot National Monument, Fort Verde State Historic State Park, Dead Horse Ranch State Park, Jerome Historical area, Montezuma Castle National Monument, Red Rock State Park, and numerous other outdoor attractions that are not in downtown Sedona. A slow drive up or down Oak Creek Canyon and a stop at Slide Rock State Park will show you the wilder side of life. Yes, the town can get busy, but there's a lot of remote areas and things to see. Step out of town and enjoy.

ps: get a hamburger at The Haunted Hamburger bar/pub/restaurant in Jerome. Just bring appetite

Yes, Jerome is well worth the visit - keep in mind this is a visit with tv or toad - not your rig! In fact, think there is a length restriction on the road up. Neat town.

Here are some photos from my web site. 2003. Changed quite a bit since then, but still a cool place. Make sure you take a ride down Slide Rock. Sedona

Sedona, and the area, is lovely to look at and interestingly different. Sedona has attracted a vast array of old hippies. They have opened shops, paint, read fortunes, and "feel the vibes of the vortex". There aren't many places quite like this, but getting in and out of town is somewhat of a hassle with an RV. Rancho Sedona is a very nice $pot on the river, but if it's full try Distant Drums, just off 17 south of Sedona. I agree that Jerome is worth a visit, as is Flagstaff (but neither of those places have RV parks that are as nice as the two I mentioned). There are several nice ones in Williams, which is not too far.

Jerome is one of the most vertical towns I've seen...definitely worth a visit. The one-time mining town billed itself as the wickedest city in the west, but I think every old mining town said the same thing about themselves.

If you are not into vortices and crystals, the Chapel of the Holy Cross is a beautiful work of architecture and open to the public. Chapel of the Holy Cross.

We really enjoyed the area about 15 years ago, but not so much a few years ago. One to two days is good - can get a feel for the area and get in a hike or two, then move on. Enjoy!
