I think the 6.0 is worth considering IF it has had the preventative work done on it--EGR delete and head studs changed out--ask the seller to provide evidence. You certainly don't want the risk of having to pick up that expense ($2500 or so) in the event it has not been done and it goes the way of many 6.0s. I do believe also the '05 model was less problematic than the years that preceded it.
I have a V10 Excursion. It is a very capable and reliable vehicle. While the 6.0 diesel is a more powerful puller it comes with its own set of problems. If you decide to go that way do your homework and budget accordingly. I have made several upgrades to my Ex. Added a rear sway bar, Roadmaster Active Suspension on rear and changed the leaf springs on the front. It is a very solid and capable TV. I lucked out and mine came with the 4.30 gears from the factory. I have added a SCT tuner from 5Star tuning which really woke the V10 up. Towing I get 7.5-8mpg and non-towing 13-14 hwy. Back and forth to work is 12-12.5 mpg. Of the two Ex's you listed the V10 would be the more reliable right out of the box. The 6.0 cam be made reliable but you would need to invest some time and money to make it so. Good luck, John.
Save yourself a lot of headache/worry and get the V10. Reliable and quiet.
Considering the size of your Spree, the X will be in a sweet spot. Your towing MPG will probably be better than the torture you're dealing with your Expy.
Unloaded MPG will be disappointing compared to what you get now.
If your trailer was heavier, maybe the Diesel but I'd estimate you're around 8000 lbs now.
I just wouldn't recommend taking on the pain of the 6.0 PSD/POS unless your were 2000 lbs heavier.
What's the price difference on the two trucks?

That doesn't do anything to prevent ever-so-common Injector failures, which can all go out if the fuel system ever has low pressure (weak pump, pressure regulator fault, etc). Expect to pay $260+ per injector, and 5 hours of labor to do them all.
That also doesn't address the oil cooler, which can still result in a hydro-locked motor if it isn't caught. The EGR delete kit actually makes this more likely because the other systems of blockage won't be noticed first.
PS - I fix 6.0 diesels. I've had them come in with under 80,000 miles and require$4,000+ to properly get them on the road again. I also drive a V10, with 334,000 trouble-free miles. And, with some basic bolt-on & plug-in upgrades the V10 can smoke a stock 6.0 even in the mountains.

I bought a 2000 X V10 to replace my older van... Motor and power were the high points…
I bought it to replace my van and it should have been a far superior TV… should have been!!!… it had the heavy tow package, but I don’t know what that meant… it wasn’t a horrible TV, but it wasn’t a good one either… it was a very nice daily driver as long as there was a gas station along the route, while towing mileage wasn’t to bad, non towing mileage wasn’t very good at all…
It needed the rear anti sway bar added and some rear spring help and still had a axle wrap issue… to be done right would have need all 4 spring packs upgraded…
Even though the steering box on mine was in good condition and didn’t need adjusted it wandered on the road as did every one I have driven although it wasn’t bad on any of them, just noticeable… braking was good but not great… parts all seemed to carry a 20% premium…
I used mine a year and for 20,000 miles, calculated the cost of the upgrades it needed, sold it and put my van back into service… even though the van had 180,000 miles on it and pulled the mountains about 5 MPH slower, it steered better, braked better, and handled better, and it has a lot more room…
I have the half back utility conversion van and it has been a supper TV

I tow with the ProPride--do you think I'll still need a rear sway bar?
I have no idea about rear springs...where can I get those done? Is there a significant cost involved? How does it improve towing performance?

A ridiculous amount of money, like almost 20K dollars. Although, I think the diesel is WAY overpriced (from a Ford dealer), and the V-10 is priced low...which makes me kind of leery. However, the seller of the V-10 says he has all the service records.
Thanks everyone...seems like the over whelming majority is the V10. It would be the daily driver for one of us, so we'll take the hit at the gas pump, I suppose. Maybe I'll go take a look at it this week.
Some other information, which I'm not sure makes a difference:
I have a ProPride hitch.
P3 Brake Controller
TT weighs 6,800 unloaded (I know this means nothing)
GVWR 7,900

I am wondering if anyone who is, or who has towed with an Excursion can speak to the pros and cons of choosing the V10 over the diesel or vice versa.
Do they both have similar power?
What is the mpg comparison?
What kind of longevity can I expect between the two?
Any opinions, tips and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
