In a campground in AZ with a tree fairly close to our living room slide. Thought is was pretty cool to view the woodpeckers IN the tree but now they are on the edge of the RV pecking at the window and sometimes I hear them closer to the roof. Anyone else ever encounter this and what can be done to deter them away from the RV?

A woodpecker has a very hard pecker so I would think he'd easily break the glass.
If it were me I'd shoo him away and not let him begin.
Good luck

Got anything shiny to hang outside? Even some ribbon or aluminum foil, or un-needed CD's?

In the city, to deter pidgeons-they have pads with short dull spikes. They put these pads on top of air conditioners, or anywhere they don't want the birds to land. Maybe you could make something like this with styrofoam and toothpicks? Might look like Redneck city, but if it works?

Drumming is a woodpecker's act of rapidly pecking on a resonant object to create a pattern of sound. Depending on the habitat, woodpeckers may choose hollow logs or trees, house siding, utility poles, rain gutters, trash cans or chimneys for drumming. The exact pattern of the drumming will vary in tempo, length and rhythm depending on the woodpecker species, and most species have distinctive drumming sounds.

You could cover your entire RV with padding to make it less resonant (just kidding) or perhaps if you could find something that was MORE resonant, they would prefer it to your trailer. Maybe a old hubcap.

In a neighborhood I used to live in, the streetlights had shades on top that looked just like a big bell. The woodpeckers loved drumming on those.

We had the same problem, BUT most species of Woodpeckers are protected under federal law.

We put an Woodpecker appropiate nesting box over the spot. (The size of the hole in the box is important) We then enjoyed the same pair returning year after year.

We had one work on our Alpenlite fifth wheel for about a week before he gave up. He sounded like he was on the roof but it took a while to discover where his remodel job located. He or she was trying to ream out one of the plastic pieces where you manually crank out the bedroom slide. It was tough plastic and he finally gave up. I would pound on the ceiling or wall and it would leave and come back when we weren't there.
