I have a 2012 D/A Silverado with about 3200 miles. I have noticed the last day or 2 that the idle was running at around 800 rpm when normal seemed around 600. Now after a day or so it seems to be back to normal. Is this an exhaust burn off? I drive fire trucks for a Volunteer company in the area I live and the new trucks have and exhaust regeneration. Once it kicks on it takes a while for it to shut off. Any ideas?

Yep - the DPF is in regeneration mode. Sometimes the compass in the dash will be goofy at this same time...

During a regen your idle speed will bump up from the normal 600 RPM to 850. Also, as Salty Dog said, your compass will stop working. Regens usually take about 30 minutes to complete at highway speed - longer in stop & go situations or if you shut the engine off before the regen completes.

Why does the compass go wonky?

Like others have said you are experiencing a regen cycle. In addition to the non functional compass and higher rpm's, the engine will also sound different during acceleration if you listen carefully. I also have an Edge Insight CS Monitor to indicate when mine is in regen, amongst many other engine parameters.

Nobody can seem to answer that question. I'm not sure if the '12 models do it too, maybe someone with one can chime in.

I'm in - exhaust regeneration cycle. A burnt rubber smell from exhaust is another sign it's happening.
