Hubby and I want to one day go to Alaska, hopefully when he retires. We have watched several shows on TV where they mention needing guns because of bears and such for protection. We are not gun owners so we were wondering what happens to those of you with guns in your RV when you get to Canada. Are they taken away, do you have to have special permits? If you need the gun in Alaska do you just wait and buy one up there? Does the gun have to be a hunting rifle in order for it to be in you posession? Thanks for any information or advice......

If you are not a weapon owner now and have no clue what to buy or how to use it ..Don't. Wait untill you get to Alaska and buy some bear spray if you feel you gotta have it. And remember that TV is just that TV.

Here's a good place to start.
I've only been to Alaska once, so far: 2 months from Kodiak to Deadhorse. I legally transported and carried a short barrel shotgun, but was never even close to needing it.

During all of our travels, we've never needed a gun. We've watched the bears, photographed the bears, but have never felt the need to shoot a bear. And we camp in the bush, on backroads, without another soul around.
I also often BBQ steak or grill fish for dinner. Of course, this is only after we've scouted around to check for bear sign (poo) and we feel reasonably assured that the area is not frequented by bears.
All the years I've lived in Yukon as a youngster, we never had a gun.
And now that I live here again, the only time we've used a gun was to do away with a porcupine.
The risk of a bear attack is low. Actually, I think moose kill more people than bears!

With permits most long guns are allowed in Canada. No handguns are allowed. If your seriously going to get a gun go take gun training first so you'll know how to handle one when you get one.

Never needed a gun all the times we were there. Only time I've ever really need a gun was when I was in Vietnam (3 times) and I had all I needed/wanted. JMHO

Lots and lots of travelers go to Alaska and do not carry guns. I didn't when I went and never felt that I needed one. If you are going to go hiking into the wilderness than that is a different situation, but for traveling the highways and sightseeing, even into Denali, you will not need a gun.

I'm a Canadian firearms instructor and own many long and short guns...unless I'm going hunting or to a shooting match (IPSC) my guns stay home....I have spent many nights in the bush and never needed to defend myself from wild life.
Television sensationalizes things, don't take reality tv too seriously.
Cheers.

Rifles and shotguns can be transported thru Canada with the proper permit. Permits are not required in Alaska, you may carry concealed as long as you declare it to law enforcement when confronted. If you stay on the road system in Alaska the odds of you needing are very slim to none. If you go into the bush area where you would be on foot, 4-wheeler or horse then I would consider protection. If you are on a overnight guided trip the guide would normally provide the protection. If you need or want protecion I would recommend both shotgun and bear spray, and recommend some training to handle both.
A usefull overall gun is either the short barrel 870 Remington pump or the 500 Mossberg. The most important thing is to be aware of your surroundings before venturing into unknown areas. Most populated areas are safe but people tend to congregate in known bear feeding areas and that is where confrontations can happen. Some on these areas do not allow you to have protection so be sure to enquire before entering these areas such as Denali to know their rules and what they allow.
