In some of these answers it explains why I see on some rigs the owners live in say, Florida but only western states are filled. Traveling through a state is not a valid reason for "counting" that state as "Seen" it. I think I will adapt this as my adding a state it my map. I don't want to wear a shirt from Pikes Peak it I haven't been there.

I've been in 41 states but that was when I was working, not rving, so if it were me, they would not count.

You can't just go around making up rules to suit yourself. Some world we'd have if everyone did that.
So what IS the rule, here?

When it comes to how to do YOUR map on YOUR RV, of course YOU can make YOUR OWN rules! THAT is the only real rule!
I made my own rule. It says that since there is NO rule requiring a map, there will be no map on my RV. It would be pointless to have one, anyway, because all of my travel is in the West.

We need to visit a lot more states before starting ours (3 states colored in would look silly). Our rule for when to add a state is when we camp a night there as a family. Having a father who was in the army, I lived in a lot of states and visited even more. Even camped in several as a kid, we have the map as a thing for our family.

Cool! I get all Fifty States then... pretty sure I've flown over all of them. Does it still count if some States were obscured by a full cloud cover?

Sure that'll count... if you put the map on your plane...

There is no protocol. Your map, your rules.

I would think you would have to have a pretty good view out your window to count the state. No cloud cover, no night flights, and limit the plane to a prop so you can really see the view.

Don't have a map and don't plan on getting one but if I did, It would be did I spend time in the state camping since it was on a RV. Just just me and you may use whatever rule you like or adopt someone elses if it feel right to you.

Yup, it is your map so you get to set your own rules. For us it is only the places we have camped at least one night in this RV.
