How is Hwy 80 doing these days? We are heading out from San Jose on Tuesday around noon. What can I expect on the highway to Reno?

From reports on here it is nasty to say the least. Construction on part of it and the rest is so torn up you will be lucky to maintain 40MPH.

Make sure you get underway before and through the following points before 3 PM. Just TOO many bottlenecks that are stop and go if you do not. The main ones from our perspective, are Cordelia Junction in Fairfield/Suisun, Richardson Bldv @ I-80 in Davis. and possibly again at the Yolo Causeway in Sacramento. I-80 also gets jammed up about after 4 PM on the way out of Sacramento. From 9 to 3 are generally the best times to move along this corridor, although only one "incident" can foul things up for hours.
Hope this helps
Bill

And those rumors (obviously not accurate reports) would be completely false. I-80 is in great shape except for the areas being rebuilt which were badly needed.

Thanks Litch. The area from Truckee towards Reno is my biggest concern because that is where the construction was when I last drove that route. Living in Truckee, I am sure you have up to date information.

It might have helped if, in the original post, you'd indicated when you last drove this route. Then people could focus on changes since then.

I just checked the CA DOT site for current I-80 information between Sacramento and Reno; here's the link:

What's your alternative? US50 has some construction as well, plus more stop lights and grades.

Construction from Truckee to Reno is complete, those nightmare narrow lanes gone. Some minor repaving in a few sections but otherwise smooth sailing.
