Newbie question. How does it work? I know how to position everything and etc. due to search function in this forum. But I'm talking about actually being there. You press the button, pay there and you get the weights or you press the button, drive off and go somewhere to get the results?

You really should move your hitch forward two inches if possible and put some more weight on the front. Better stability.

Yes, can somebody please elaborate on the CAT scale procedure. We would like to weigh our Motorhome. Was able to weigh the last one at the scrap metal scales but not this one. Thanks.

Typically, there is an attendant to take your money and give you weigh slips. I've never used a CAT scale however.

They all work pretty much the same.

Bring a broom

Use the broom handle to press the "call button" which is about 10' off the ground.

You pull onto the scale, making sure all of your axles are on different "pads" of the scale to get individual weights, the RV axles can be on the same pad if you have tandem axles. Press the call button with your broom handle. At the scale I used, the call button is on the small yellow sign parallel to the truck just above the driver's door in my picture. They ask you if this is a re-weigh or first weigh. It works like a drive through. You say first weigh, there should be a pause, they might ask you for a tractor #, I just gave them my licence plate number. Go in and get your scale printout. Note the number in the bottom left corner - "weigh number". Cost is about $10.

Then, you go drop the RV on their lot somewhere out of the way, and pull back onto the scale with just your tow vehicle. Press call button again. This time, say re-weigh, and they will ask you for the "weigh number". Tell them the number from the bottom left of your first ticket. Again, there will be a slight pause and they will tell you you're done and to come in and get your printout. Cost is about $2 for a re-weigh.

Compare the two as I did.

Unfortunately, it's not adjustable fore and aft. Even if it was, I don't think I'd want the nose of the RV any closer to my back window. Already paid for that lesson once

OUCH! I understand. With the amount of weight you are towing you wont have any provlems, you have enough mass in the truck VS the trailer.

How about liability and insurance? A friend of mine said he won't weigh his rig because he's afraid of being over. He said that if insurance investigates it they maybe wouldn't pay damages in case of an accident.

How would they know what his weights are unless he gave them the info. It is not too hard to figure out if someone is over weight if there is an accident. Maybe it is just better being blind to the obvious?

I took a broom handle and duct taped a piece of foam rubber to it. Pull on to the scale (I made sure there weren't any Big Rigs waiting). There are three pads. Put your steering wheels on the farthest pad, your drive wheels on the next pad and your trailer wheels on the last pad. The button is very high up, use the broom handle to push the button. The attendant will ask if this is a first weight or a reweigh. Tell them first weight. They will ask for your truck number. Tell them that you are a private vehicle. They will give you a reference number or ask for the last 4 of your SSAN. They will then ask you to pull off and come inside. You go in and pay your money ($9.995 last time I went) and they give you a ticket with the weights. Good luck, it's painless. If you want to just weigh the truck, you can get a reweigh for much less within (I think) 24 hrs so you can pull into the Big Rig parking area and drop the trailer & circle back for your reweigh.
