wow I bet you jumped very high when that happened.
I also am a big storm lover. any T-storm I am at the window, open the door, stand and watch, get into the garage with a chair and sit and watch.
big lightening strike nearby would make my hair curl with excitement!
but yes caution and safety is first!!!!

Years ago we were tenting at Lake Carmi State Park in northern Vermont. The kids (teenagers) were in one tent and the wife and I were in another one about 10' away. There was this incredible lightning strike and immediate clap of thunder that seem to shake the ground.
In the morning we found a 4' piece of tree branch that was about 4"-6" in diameter impaled about a foot into the ground about 25' from our tents.
It wad pretty scary to think how close that was. Our son however, slept through the whole thing. Our daughter ended up in our tent.

My deceased wife and I had a similar experience when canoeing in Florida with our 2 oldest kids. We were in 2 canoes and immediately went to shore, tied up the canoes and got on the bank. I only had a small pocket knife and cut some palm fronds to use as umbrella's to keep the rain off our heads as much as possible. We all really got soaked. Lots of thunder and lightening. I thought our goose was cooked but we all survived. Pretty scary though.
I am glad no one was injured. The bank was so muddy we all fell into the water trying to empty the canoes of water. LOL.... Quite the experience. LOL....

38 years ago, still in a tent, we were outside Quebec City when a storm hit. First one I had ever been in. Bolts were hitting all around us. Really exciting. So much electricity in the air our radio fried. Unfortunately so did the couple in the tent one site over. Direct Hit. Gives one an immediate wake up as to the power of nature and exactly how lucky and helpless one can be. Remember this like yesterday.

Our Other happy space camping this year was in Terlingua Texas for a week. Better known for the worldwide chili cook off origin or for its location next to Big Bend nat park. Drinking a cold beer sitting on the porch of the 100 year old company commissary and watching the sun set is Fabulous. Knowing that you can sign out for a six pac at six pac price and keep the undrunk in the commissary chiller is useful also.
Happy space in 2009 was up the Dalton road near attigun pass camping for 3 days along the haul road. Three days no nights, grizzly walking in the stream bed.
Gotta have happy spaces

It's not the tires that provide protection from the lightning, if it was so many motorcycle riders wouldn't be killed by it. The protection comes from the skin of the vehicle (car) around you. Same principle probably applies in a fiberglass camper but not sure if you have to wait for the rain or not.
