I recently received an offer from Good Sam trying to sell me supplemental health insurance. Your letter stated that I had a 1 in 2 chance of being diagnosed with some form of cancer and I had better get your insurance to protect me and my loved ones from the financial impact of the cost of treatment. Do you really think using scare tactics like this to sell insurance is ethical? I was not only offended, but astounded that you would make that kind of claim with no evidence to back it up. Also, the purported benefits you offered would barely cover the cost of a band aid and an aspirin in today's world. I think I will think seriously about whether or not to continue with Good Sam. I'm very disappointed in you.

Facts are facts, they are scary.......The National Cancer Institute estimates that 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will get cancer in their lifetimes, insured or not. I assume your a male. I've had prostate cancer and it's expensive.

First post! Just joined to rant about an advertisement he got in the mail. If we all did that about what we get in the mail, there would be no room for discussion here.

I take all that stuff I get in the mail and run it through a cross-cut shredder. Then I have party stuff!

Reminds me of my dad's favorite saying when people threw numbers at him. Figures lie and liars figure. I don't think that's all that unusual, but it does leave a bad taste in your mouth when it happens. I've run into that twice recently, one, with of all things, dentists, and another with alarm system sales reps.

I just tell the alarm reps they should sell life insurance to the dirt bags, if they break in they're the ones that will be in danger, not me. The dentists I just write off as losers who are probably inclined to do work that's not needed, too.

Not saying there may not be a grain of truth to what they say, but those who try to exploit it and intimidate people to make money turn me off. I think everyone should have some form of major medical insurance at least so that a serious illness doesn't financially cripple them. But I don't think selective insurance, like mortgage or cancer insurance makes good sense. Unfortunately, I think some of these marketing people don't realize their tactics may turn off more potential customers than they're able to scare into a purchase.

Unfortunately, I think more are probably turned on than off, or else they wouldn't spend the $$ on all this advertisement. I'm sorry to say there's a lot of gullible people out there who are taken in every day on advertisement like this.

I take all this unsolicited mail and either return it back to the senders (if they provide a postage free return envelope) or feed it to my very hungry shredder.

Before you can sell a product, you have to sell the need. That is a legitimate sales tactic used everyday. I don't know if their statistics are accurate, but why let it get you riled up? Getting riled up probably causes cancer too.

Silly complaint IMO.

I agree. That is a popular sales tactic that is used every day, and it works - unfortunately.

Too bad the poster used this topic as his first post.
