The vast majority of RV's have a propane stove which generates more BTU's than any other fuel, good ole fashioned stove top pots are sold everywhere so why don't more folks use them? Why the need for AC power when in just about the same amount of time you can brew up a nice, very hot, delicious pot of coffee without waking your neighbors? Heck you can even stick the pot right on the campfire.

We picked up our large blue speckled pot which makes four large mugs in about ten minutes at Sportsman's Warehouse for less than $15. I like to fill the pot the night before, drop in a flat filter and then all I have left in the morning is to spoon in the nice fresh coffee and light the stove. If it affects no one else make your coffee any way you like but at O'dark thirty the sound of your generator carries farther than stink and is about as welcome.

Feel free to flame away since it does not require a generator.

Maybe I should switch to decaf...sigh.

Mostly it's because they don't care, and they can. Most generators users think nothing of cranking up at dawn, and waking the entire CG up just for coffie. While others like us. Feel bad for making a little noise while we start our fire to cook on.

Wow. The people who live in NC must be real a-holes compared to the folks out here in California. After nearly 50 years of camping, I have yet to EVER hear a generator come on at dawn (or anytime even close to dawn for that matter).

Wow....I live in NC and don't feel I'm an a-hole, and I too have been camping well over 50 years and never heard a genny fire up so early in the morning in NC, SC, VA, TN or WV that it woke me up....in fact, I never owned one myself until a little over a year ago and have yet to use it.

It's an art to make coffee on top of the stove with that type of coffee pot...took my wife a few tries because it had been some years since we made coffee like that, but she has it down to an art now...Don't exactly know what coffee she uses, though in the electric drip coffee maker, its Dunkin Doughnut Coffee....but the stove top coffee she makes is GREAT!!! when we fry eggs and bacon and make that pot of coffee on the gas stove, those aromas bring back a lot of great memories I had as a kid camping with my parents and siblings.....seems to taste better when camping...Will probably "perk" some up this coming weekend when we go camping again....really do enjoy a cup of coffee made on the gas stove..

I've made PLENTY of perked coffee. I'm glad there are now plenty of other choices. The problem is that when the coffee "perks" it boils and burns the coffee. Not necessarily all of the coffee in the pot burns if you are good at making it, But, some of it does and I don't like it. If you do, that's great. It doesn't matter if I don't like it, you aren't making it for me!

So, in response to the OP, the burning of the coffee is what is wrong with percolators. Not everyone thinks that is a problem, only some of us do.

I have not mastered the art of stove top percolating. I make the coffee at home the day before we leave, pour it into empty 2 liter pop bottles and refridgerate. When it's time for coffee at camp, I pour the coffee into my stove top percolator and heat it up on the stove. It's may not be the best coffee, but it's quick and quiet. We never camp with electricity, so this works for us.
I take a 2 liter bottle for each day of camping, that way I know we will have plenty. We drink alot of coffee!

I love how this place just THRIVES on judgmentalism and personal attacks!

Note: if I DO start my generator at 7am...the only one that will know it is me and anyone that watches me do it!

Do it at a Campground on the Blue Ridge Parkway, and we will all know it. no matter how quiet you THINK your generator is. there is no such thing as a quiet generator up there. Where you can hear a pin drop across the valley.

Rustling leaves in a 2mph breeze drown it out. With the generator running, window open, and the stove lit, the perking coffee drowns out the generator. Honda inverter generators (mine is an Eu3000) are essentially silent.

right.......Do you sell those things??? The perking coffee drowns out the generator??? Rustling leaves in a 2 mph breeze drown it out??? Man, I hate to get off topic, but those two statements are just plain over the top I don't doubt that they're quite, but you have to be just a little realistic....as Terryallan stated, you'd hear that genny fire up if up on the Blue Ridge Parkway...yeah, it can get REAL quite up there.....You would hear it fire up where I camp in Pence Springs WV, on Greenbriar River, ("middle of nowhere" and very, VERY quite at times).

Back to topic...forget generators, that's not what we're talking about.

nothing wrong with coffee made on a gas stove....you have to know how to make it and like that kind of coffee...my wife has mastered making this coffee...one things for sure, if it sets for a bit, you don't have to warm it back up real soon..

WOW! After over 1100 views and 66 posts I have learned more about making coffee than I knew there was to know....and Thank You! It is a good thing I live in Tucson as with only 4 flames it would be tough to keep warm. Seriously though, I think I may just have to go and buy one of the presses described here. Sounds (pun intended), like it might be better coffee in my cup and still no noise to disturb my neighbors.

For the flamers, sorry you found my question to be an assault on your precious right to disturb others in the pursuit of a cup of Joe, as that was not my intention. Clearly, a quality cup of coffee need not require the use of AC. The quiet of an early morning in camp is for me priceless and one of the many reasons I go. The wealth of info posted here clearly demonstrates that a good cup of coffee and running a generator do not necessarily go hand in hand.

Ok - lets see if this helps you.

What coffee maker do you use when you are at Camp Walmart? One you can put on the stove or one you have to use your generator for?

Anyone who "states" that Starbucks burns their beans have never truly had coffee made from burnt beans.

Now, if in your opinion Starbucks coffee "tastes" like it has been burnt, well then that's your opinion and I would never argue over taste (which is subjective).

Yes, I like Starbucks coffee. And I've witnessed the process of roasting coffee beans at a commercial level as well as for individual home use.
Believe me: Starbucks is not burnt beans. Not even close.
Burning the beans provides a bitter backbone of flavor, but absolutely zero depth. And whether you enjoy a dark roast or not, most of the starbuck blends have tremendous depth. Although their french roast is flat and bitter IMHO.

Even those who don't like Starbucks should be able to agree they know coffee, and they only buy quality coffee. To say they 'burn the beans' - well I agree with you. That is ridiculous. I can see some people not wanting to spend the dollars for their coffee, but the coffee is of high quality.

As to the OP, I just don't like Perk coffee. I would only drink it as a last resort. Just personal preference for many as to why some don't use a percolater. If I did not have electric at my site, however, i would not crank a genny early in the morn to run my Keurig, I would resort to instant before perk as instant tastes about as good (good being a subjective term here lol) and much easier.
