We have tried both on our boat using propane usea to much gas. generator is quicker and lass gas also if you start your gen every morning you will be suprised how much better it starts and runs after a week. We would start the gen make coffee and let it run for a half hr every morning to charge batteries. Kills two birds with one stone.

I'm low tech. I buy coffee in filter packs. Toss a couple in an blue enameled steel pot and bring it to a boil and shut it off. In a few minutes it's suitable for drinking. On the other hand, as long as you're not running a construction type generator, I probably won't even notice.

We bought a M/H in '86 and bought a stove top coffee maker, no longer have the M/H now have a 5er, but we still have the coffee maker, BTW made in the good ol USA. Went to buy a larger pot, didn't last at all, made in China. Guess tires aren't the only bombs. All the coffee pots are from china. now. Won't be buying a larger pot after all

Not so! "Cowboy Coffee" has been mentioned a couple of times. THAT is the ONLY way to make REAL COFFEE! If it dissolves the rust from an old horse shoe, it is JUST RIGHT!

We do our coffee on the stove top when camping. Have for 45 years. Make the coffee the night before and pour it in a pump pot like you see in gas stations or a carafee like you see in some resturants or my thremos I use for work. Sometimes all of the above. If I fired up the genny I would get shot. DW packs and Dose Not do mornings. I get up between 4-5 a.m. and she don't move till 10am. If the coffee is cool in the morning then I put it back in the pot and turn the gas on and reheat it. Not that finicky about my coffee, Just allways have a cup close all day. Can't drink FRU-FRU coffee from Starbucks or ar any of those places. Just give me plain old 30 weight truck stop coffee and I'm a Happy Camper!!! And I buy my Bailey's by the 1/2 gallon. Great in the mornings.

There has been a number of references lately to firing up the genny or "needing" electrical hook ups to make a pot of coffee. Naturally this quest for caffeine often comes early in the morning, that's when I like mine, but I have got to ask:

"What's wrong with a stove top coffee pot?"

The vast majority of RV's have a propane stove which generates more BTU's than any other fuel, good ole fashioned stove top pots are sold everywhere so why don't more folks use them? Why the need for AC power when in just about the same amount of time you can brew up a nice, very hot, delicious pot of coffee without waking your neighbors? Heck you can even stick the pot right on the campfire.

We picked up our large blue speckled pot which makes four large mugs in about ten minutes at Sportsman's Warehouse for less than $15. I like to fill the pot the night before, drop in a flat filter and then all I have left in the morning is to spoon in the nice fresh coffee and light the stove. If it affects no one else make your coffee any way you like but at O'dark thirty the sound of your generator carries farther than stink and is about as welcome.

Feel free to flame away since it does not require a generator.

Maybe I should switch to decaf...sigh.

Mostly it's because they don't care, and they can. Most generators users think nothing of cranking up at dawn, and waking the entire CG up just for coffie. While others like us. Feel bad for making a little noise while we start our fire to cook on.

I say "fire up the genny early and often"...folks should be up enjoying the fresh air and the sunrise anyway!!

I have seen alot of responses for what folks do after the coffee is made but only a few stating HOW they made it. I agree that perked coffee can be worse than drinking motor oil. However I do not like strong coffee at all. I enjoy a mild to medium cup of coffee and do not drink the lattes and such no matter what flavor they are. Black. Occasionally with a touch of sugar.
One big blue speckled pot. Fill just to the bottom of the spout holes with water. Place flat filter in the basket. 3 Tablespoons of coffee grounds. I use Folgers cause it's what I had at home. Build fire. when the fire is just about down to coals and 1-2 inch high flames. I put the pot on the grate about 10 -12 inches above the fire. I try to place the pot just to the side of the hottest area. Once it starts to perk I move it to the side so it isn't directly over the heat and let it slowly perk for 15- 20 mins. Perfection.

I have ABSOLUTELY NO CLUE how my wife makes the coffee on the gas stove, I just know that the first several times she tried, we were about to figure it wasn't going to happen...then she did a little research, tried a few things and now, to me, it taste as good as, if not better than the coffee we drink from the electric coffee maker...

Our pot is also "blue speckled" and she has also made the coffee over a campfire, taste about as good as made on the gas stove, but not quite...give her a few more tries and she'll have that one down to an art also..

"What's wrong with a stove top coffee pot?"

Absolutely Nothing wrong with it. We started with the Mr Coffee type, don't remember the actual mfgr.
Then we were in a CG without hookups (Yellowstone) & generator hours weren't till 8 am, well, we were up & gone before that, now we have the old percolator, & don't care when generator hours are, we can still have coffee.
