DW has it on the television (she recorded it) as I write.
Oh, its a soap opera alright. JR is the same stinker, Bobby is the same way, and the two sons are exactly like their fathers.
But, its been kind of interesting. So who knows???

We watched the new Dallas last night--fully expected to NOT like it, but actually we thought it was pretty good. Of course, it can't top the old one.......and I agree that there are few new ideas out there in the entertainment business--just re-makes and sequels.

I didn't watch the original --- too much of a soap opera.
DH watched the original and wanted to watch this. I TRIED to not get involved.....but I did. I have to say .... I don't like Larry Hagman any more today than I did way back then.

Dallas.
Reminds we of the attempt to bring back "Hawaii Five 0."
or...imagine trying to redo "All in the Family," or "Seinfeld."
Very difficult or impossible.

I watched it and enjoyed it. JR still has that evil twinkle in his eye. I thought that they introduced too many characters into it too soon. Made it a bit difficult for me to keep up. But I'll set the DVR for all the series as long as it runs.
The alternative is Duet and Dancing with the Stars etc. No contest.

Hawaii Five-O is the return of an old show, but I really like it. I never saw the original.
I probably wouldn't have watched Dallas before, but I certainly won't now sfter the comments about it being a soap opera.

THIS ^^^
I watched the old show way back when, and the new show has the same flavor with some modern updates, young beautiful people, etc.. I was also prepared not to like it, but my wife and I both enjoyed it. It was cool to see JR come alive once he knew a huge fight over Southfork was at hand. Unless it goes downhill, it will stay on my list.

The original 5-0 was not creative. Same plot everyweek. Almost the same script. I was part of the crew seasons 72-73. There was talk about bringing in a women cop since Cagney and Lace broke that TV barrier. Also talked about bringing personallity to the characters, writing in reality to the scripts, ramping up the action/drama to big screen quality, and changing locations. But this was 70s TV. Producers that had a hit believed "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." All TV series were shot "en total cheapo." And Jack Lord who always had the final say-so was paranoid about change. When I saw the new series I was thrilled they made all ther changes discussed 40 years ago, especially recasting Kono as a female. I hope 5-0 runs it's full 7 seasons, but casting and script quagmire can endanger any series.
As far as Dallas, most TV series remakes fail after the first season when the nostalgia wears off. Dallas' strong point in the 80s was the fact it was the first true prime time soap opera. Now most series' are built on the soap opera model more or less.

Was a fan of the original Dallas, which was the number one show on TV for many years. Who shot JR was a national rage in its day!! Liked the new Dallas, looks like JR is up to his old tricks..

About halfway through the season, one of the old characters will wake up and realize the whole new series was just a dream...
