I have a Chevy 454 carb motor that's hard to start in the morning but when it starts it runs perfect, it has a electric fuel pump switch that I have to turn on before I start it my question is how long do I let the pump run before I start it??? Or could the be something going on...The motor only has 61,000 miles! Thanks

I'm hard to start in the morning too, until I have my cup of coffee.... ....
My guess would be a weak spring in the automatic choke. You might get by with a simple adjustment...loosen the three screws on the side and move it up a notch or two. If that doesn't help, you probably should rebuild the carb.....Dennis

On a carbed engine, you have to kick the accelerator pedal once or twice, to engage the automatic choke butterfly and the high speed idle cam.

Is your mechanical lift pump blocked off with a face plate? When you switch on your electric pump, have you looked around for any pressure leaks? I am assuming the original equipment lift pump was replaced with an aftermarket frame mount electric pump. If not then pay no attention to my post. If it has been done this way, check the face place area for a leak down of fuel.

Depending on ambient temperature it may not close on a cold engine even when properly adjusted. If I recall correctly, a properly adjusted rochester choke plate should just about close at 70 degrees F. So at summertime temps, it may not close very much. On one of my rochester equipped trucks that is very hard to cold start, the fuel bowl is emptying out when it sits. I have not traced it yet to the fuel pump or leaking bowl plugs. I suspect the later. On the cold engine, can you see raw fuel being pumped into the carb when looking down the horn if you pump the accelerator prior to trying to start? If not I suspect the bowl is draining down.

Yo there is a fix for the Rochester 4bbl leaking down. The plugs under the main well jet don't seat properly and fuel leaks by. I just smeared some epoxy in the area around the plugs and it stopped the leaking.

Viola!!!..choke plate doesn't close...engine won't run right til it's warm...fix the choke and your problems disappear.fortunately an easy and inexpensive fix......Dennis

jay317.....With the engine cold in the morning, remove the air cleaner and housing. Open the throttle wide open and keep it open. With the throttle open, adjust the choke until it's closed. There is also a fast idle screw that usally won't need adjustment, but make sure the stepped cam on the linkage moves and the fast idle screw is on the cam step This raises the idle speed while choked. Now release the throttle and open one more time. This should give you the correct setup for a cold start.
The procedure on your Chevrolet is to step on the gas pedal twice to set the choke and fast idle cam and to add enough fuel into the engine for the start. Once the engine starts, let it run until it's warm. Press the pedal one more time to release the choke and the fast idle screw from the cam.
