Who has driven to Shaver lake? What can you tell me about the drive up the hill? I'm going for the first time and curious if I should tow my boat behind my 25' class c or have my son tow it behind my truck?

I understand there's a 50 mile hill to climb with a pretty steep grade. I'm also curious if its narrow or winding?

Thanks

Chuck

Chuck,

We used to go to Shaver in September every year right after labor day so it was usually hot.

We always waited until early morning when it's cooler to make the climb. You go from below 1000 feet to nearly 5000 feet in 21 miles. I pull a 37 ft fifth wheel with my old truck, a 1986 chevy 3500 crew cab dually. I would put it in first gear and start up the hill. I wouldn't use full throttle so the truck wasn't working hard but the temp guage would get beyond 250 (280 is kill engine or trans zone). At times I would be down to 15MPH. It would take almost 2 hours for us to get from the bottom to Camp Edison. We got to see a lot of scenery as we slowly passed by.

As ptrout indicated it's a great road and doesn't get narrow (typical well travelled mountain resort two lane road) until you are near the top and headed into the town of Shaver Lake (About 7 miles). There are pull offs if you are holding back traffic.

It's near 5000 feet so the engines have a little trouble getting enough air. So you'll be down a little on power.

I'm guessing you are taking the truck anyway so I would tow the boat with the truck and make the climb easier on the MH.

Enjoy the lake it's great for boating, swimming and fishing.

After the four-lane section, road narrows to one lane each way. You will come to a wide hairpin curve within a mile or so, keep rmps up and after making the hairpin, punch it then drive carefully the rest of the way into Shaver. You'll enjoy it.

I once made the climb up the freeway section with a Ford Courier towing large tent trailer. It took my friend and I a whole 6-pk to climb the 7-mi stretch.

Thanks everyone! Probably have the truck tow the boat. We were just debating weather a second vehicle was needed because we can all fit in the RV. The truck will making packing easy though too. Yes PTrout we are going to Camp Edison. Its our first time at this camp so and we have heard good things. Looking forward to it.
