Who has driven to Shaver lake? What can you tell me about the drive up the hill? I'm going for the first time and curious if I should tow my boat behind my 25' class c or have my son tow it behind my truck? I understand there's a 50 mile hill to climb with a pretty steep grade. I'm also curious if its narrow or winding? Thanks Chuck

The steepest part of the climb is 2 or 3 lanes in each direction. After the climb it becomes a winding 2 lane road for most of the way to the lake. If I had the chance to have someone else tow the boat I would probably take advantage of it. I don't know what kind of power you have but I'm sure if needed you could make the pull with the boat. The lake has just been refilled after renovations to the dam and LOADED with big planted fish. Enjoy!

Any chance you know of how steep of grades it is?

4 whopping cylinders on Toyota RV's. Talk about great getting good MPG. Also I have a very light foot on the pedal. I followed some MPG advice on Livingpress.com and I now get 22 MPG! Not bad for a home on wheels.

I don't know how steep the grade is, but the winding portion brought me closer to motion sickness than I have been in years!
Once we got there, though, the Red Lake Trail (I think that was the name of it) was GREAT FUN!!
Even if I did get hung up twice and had to get pulled off the rocks.

At some points along the climb it is a 10 percent grade. Rest of it is 6 percent.

Going back down is fun as well. First or second gear and use extreme braking technique to prevent brake fade.

Have brake fluid flushed and refilled, if it hasen't beed done for some time, to help prevent brake fade. Use your gears. Don't let yokels pressure you to take curves faster than you are comfortable with. Pull out when safe an let the parade pass. Don't brake going downhill on curves.

I haven't been up the hill in an RV, but in a car/bike its a very nice quick drive.

If you are familiar with CA330 up to Big Bear then the Tollhouse grade up to Shaver will seem like a piece of cake. The steepest parts are also nice and straight for the most part.

Have fun at Shaver Lake, I try and get up there at least once a year either to Camp Edison or backpacking up in the Kaiser or Dinkey Lakes Wilderness.
