What brands should I look for to try and find a used TC for a 2006 Dodge RAM 2500 Quad cab Cummins Turbo Diesel? We want to pull an equipment trailer to tractor shows and need a smaller one that doesn't overhang the bed. Even the older Sunline 7'6" gets too close to the jack. DH doesn't want one of those "extender" hitches b/c he added a new Reese heavy duty hitch and likes it right where it is.

Does anyone even make something like this? All I see are ones that fit when the tailgate is down, which I don't want. I am seriously considering making one from the Glen L plans online.

Look at the Palomino Broncho B800 model. It's only 7 feet so it might fit your bed. This is a folding top model but the company makes hard-sides that are similar.

Sign up for Truck Camper Magazine online. Aside from the good info about TCs, there is a list of sponsor manufacturers. Just go down this list and look at the floorplans/specs of their products. Something will turn up. There is also a Phoenix customer camper company in Colorado that will make something to fit your specs - but it will be at a custom price too.

Generally, 8 ft is the minimum for a hardside TC. You might be able to go smaller with something like a Four Wheel Camper or other popup. The easiest thing to do is trade for a longbed 1 ton which makes most 8-8 1/2 campers work. Barring that, buy a Class 5 hitch and extension for a longer ball mount.

Thanks jim.

I am hoping that someone has towed a trailer and a TC with our truck and can say, "Yep, I have XYZ brand and it works great for us. Look into it".

We already have a 2010 TT, so my newest purchase will have to be a used unit.

jimh - Trading isn't an option b/c we would only use this 2-3 weekends a year. So this is a low buck operation

And DH is being stubborn about looking into a hitch extension. He doesn't want one based on some of the horrible towing set-ups we see going down the road.

I doubt you'll find a camper that short. If you do it will likely have no bathroom and hardly any room at all.
There are terrible hitch extensions out there. And then there is the Torqulift Supperhitch. Even with a 48" extension you can still tow 12,000 pounds. Now that's a hitch! I have one and tow 5,000 pounds with it. It's on my '05 Chevy dually. My camper is 11' 6" long so it overhand the long bed enough to need the 48" extension. The whole rig weighs in at 18,000 pounds. It drives great. Your husband is worrying needlessly about the proper equipment for what you want to do.

I have the exact same truck and a Hallmark Milner. Tow snowmobiles and atvs all the time. Love it! It doesnt overhang but you could not close tailgate if it was on.
