I'm pulling my TH 330 miles to a new home, and would like to know if it's OK to have the generator running; I want to keep the fridge on.

It's ok but that's what LP gas is for...

Hi,

Normally people turn on the LP gas, change the refrigerator over to gas, and leave it run that way.

The 8-10 amps that the trailer power cord can transfer to the battery from your toy vehicle each hour usually is enough to keep the battery full, and run the 12 volt controls in the RV.

If you plan on doing a lot of dry camping (without hookups) I might suggest improving the wire size between the tow vehicle and the trailer, then the battery can charge much better and faster. Or install a couple of solar panels, and the battery will stay full, even while in storage.

If you fridge uses propane, that would be the better way to go. Propane is not only less expensive than running the fridge on electric (you will save fuel) but will keep the fridge colder. Unless you are trying to exercise the generator while you drive, it is not a good idea. To exercise the generator you would have to also put on high energy consumable appliances as well.

There may be those who are able to do this, however I don't/can't. When I have the Genny running and the trailer plugged into the tow vehicle (truck running too), it causes my trucks alternator to not like it in a big way. I believe it has to do with my convertor charging the trailer battery and the truck's alternator trying to do the same thing at the same time. I did it once, and my truck made all sorts of bad-sounding noises. Haven't done it since. I run my fridge on propane, and everything is good. Hope this helps.

I use our genny when traveling, but mainly for the a/c.We turn it on about and hour or so away from our stop.Plus it gives the genny the exercise it needs.

Hi,

Most often there are no issues with running the generator while traveling.

Yes you can run it while towing. We've done it when our dogs rode in the back so we could run the A/C. We run in now when we drive too. However, as noted you can run the LP for the ridge. But! You need to remember to turn of the fridge if you pull into a gas station. In the right situation with gas fumes and the flame for the fridge you can have an explosion. Not too long ago a story came out about this and the gas attendant was badly burned. Don't just turn off the LP tank as the fridge until will try to relight several times before giving up.
