I know, You question doing it, wasn't safe, WHATEVER. Just because the Gov don't like it, don't make it bad.
WOULD I do it again? Yep.

You should let them smoke back there too. They will love it. Just because you have common sense doesn't mean you should use it.

OP:

My kids have pinned their pillow between themselves and the door with success. I've also placed a bin (filled with their toys/supplies) between them and they were able to put their pillow on it and lean over. I splurged on the factory DVD headrests which have been awesome, too.

no them smoking, might burn the mattress, and make it smell bad.

Can't recommend this. Sudden stops or impacts the girls won't have seat belts to reduce and protect them from serious injury or death. Those camper shells fly off on impact too.

.

You mean like every school bus in the world.

BTW, a propely installed truck cap, won't fly off.

and...... there isn't much difference between back of PU vs walking around in Class A.

My wife had a friend get killed while in the back of a truck. They were lying down and the truck had to slam on brakes. Not sure if the truck hit anything or not. Broke their neck. I almost got carbon monoxide poisoning riding in the back of my BIL's covered el camino when I was a teen.

You also need to check with state laws. It's often against the law for kids to ride in the back of a truck.

True - but I think this says more about the safety/quality of most class A's than a endorsement of the safety of either.....

There have been people killed in every type of vehicle known to man. with, and without seat belts, and even with the addition of air bags.
What many don't understand. Is that trucks with back seats, are in reality a relatively new thing. Untill just a few years ago few trucks had back seats. If we were to travel and tow a camper as a family. The kids rode in the back. It's just the way it was.
Do I feel it is overly dangerious? No. Life is dangerious. You can get hurt,or killed in the shower. I hope they don't out law showers.

Geez you sound like a boss of mine when we were talking about sharing hats at one time. His response...well you can get germs going to the bathroom. Looking for an excuse under an entirely different situation.

Why not just put the kids in the camper. That way they can have access to everything in the camper.

Trucks with back seats new? Since when? I've seen quad pick up trucks from the 80's around here if not older than that. And also, back in the day, it was not illegal to have kids in the back by themselves. Whether we like it or not, there are reason laws are made. Most of the time it has nothing to do with government coming up with hair brained ideas. It comes from citizens fighting for those laws and getting them implemented or if the govern, emit does it on their own, it's in response to a high number of issues dealing with it. Seat belts save lives. Do people die wearing seat belts? Yes, but studies have shown that you are more likely to reduce the chance of injury and/or death by wearing one. All it takes is one experience of a naysayer to change their mind.

You may have seen a FEW trucks from the 80s with back seats, mostly they were special ordered work trucks. Very few 150s or 1500s had back seats back then. Just like they didn't have AC, and AM, FM radios, standard in the 70s & 80s. Trucks have evolved dramaticly since the 80s. In the 90s. Manufacturers started experimenting with back seats, But a normal sized person could not ride in the back of a King Cab, and Crew Cabs just didn't have much bed.

BTW, I let the kids drink from a hose pipe as well. And go barefooted in the river. And horror of horrors. They learned to ride bikes woth out helmits.

I don't understand the thought process that "I did it when I was a kid"...when I was a kid my Mom smoked in the car with me so does that mean it's ok for ya'll to smoke in the car with my kids...NO!

Seatbelts are required and I hope anyone that puts there kids in the back of a truck or trailer gets a ticket. I work in a trauma center and we see your kids and we see your mad spouses when they blame you for the death or injury of their child.

All that aside, just let them bring their favorite pillow and blankets, maybe a game or DVD and have fun with all the scenary as well. We have all of our best family discussions on road trips (every thing from sex, to drugs, to God).

Have fun and please be safe.

TerryAllan--I really hope you remain as lucky as you have been so far.

they seem to have grown up pretty well. One is a Teacher, and the other a Draftsman. They know how to play, WITHOUT a video control in their hands. They know how to live life. I pretty well pleased with them.

BTW. they still like to ride in the back of the truck. just not as far.

I wonder how many kids in the box of a truck didn't get to grow up at all?

I used to lay in the back window of our car on vacations but I sure as hell wouldn't put my kid up there and she's far from sheltered and coddled. I know of people that have been badly injured from being in the box of a truck and getting thrown around around like a rag doll while the people in the cab were uninjured. If you feel it's safe because "we used to do it" than nothing else needs to be said except don't go around recommending something like that because of your sheer dumb luck. I'm sure the OP will ignore your advice anyway.
