If we were to travel to Yosemite anytime after August (early Sept.) do you think a campsite would be easy to get? Or should we wait till about mid September.

Thanks so very much.

Wait until mid-September when school for most kids will have started. Be aware that a campground or two in the valley may close in late September.

Once rug rats are back in school, no problems.

I was there a couple of Septembers ago. We had reservations for only part of the time we wanted to stay. But we easily got a cancellation for the rest of it.

Just heard on news yesterday (maybe day before) that they are closing one large area due to rock falls. Not sure if the area has campgrounds or not.

The closure is for some small cabins at Camp Curry. No campground closing yet.

If you can't find a campsite in the valley, there will usually be sites available at Wawona or Crane Flat.

We will also be in Yosemite in early September for our 40th.

Are you making a reservation just in case?

I have this problem of wandering a bit to go see different places along the way so a set schedule usually doesn't work too well for me.

Yosemite in less-than-peak season is great -- we were there in March -- here are some pix if you want to whet your appetite:

Yosemite in March

Don't know how full the campgrounds would be in September -- empty in March!

it's my opinion that you should still make reservations, during the shoulder months.
we wanted to camp in May for our anniversary and by late March, nearly all the campsites for May were gone.
i don't see why you would want to chance it, at such a popular place. Sept. is the time most of us without kids go camping there.

it's no longer a secret about camping after Labor Day and a lot of people have made that the time to visit Yosemite.

We won't be making a reservation, but we don't stay in the valley.
