Our sojourn in Soldotna is sans fish.
An emergency order has limited the fishing on the Kenai to catch and release (except for smaller than 20" and bigger than 55"). The limit applies to most of the creeks and rivers from here south.
They are catching reds at Russian River. We may have to backtrack if we want to have any fish. But it is combat fishing. What is combat fishing? You are in the creek with five hundred other fishermen all casting for fish.
We have a halibut charter scheduled next week. They are catching halibut, but they are on the small side. I'm hoping they will all grow up in a weeks time. :-)

Combat fishing is standing on the bank with 5-10 feet between fisherman, and you fish 15-20 feet of water in front of you coordinating your line flips with the neighbors. Different, but I found this even fun, mainly because catching Reds is a ball. They are also better to can or grill than the Kings.

lol - ok bank fishing it is! The pictures I saw depicting combat fishing, everyone was wading in the stream. Guess it can be either way.

Love those reds grilled too. Small halibut= doormat size, instead of giants. Still fun and great eating. Enjoy!!

With that many people standing that close togeather, it sounds more like snagging than fishing!

Isn't the "slot" catch and release regulation for "kings" only?

It depends on the location... At the Russian, I have always waded in with everyone else - usually to about 12" depth, maybe less. You definitely aren't going out very far, as the current is FAST and it gets deep quickly. There are places closer to the ferry landing that you don't have to wade in, but some of that area is reserved for handicapped fisherman access. There is also non-wading access on the campground side of the river - BUT - the fish aren't as active over there, so you won't catch as many in a short time.
At Deshka and Eklutna tailrace, we've never waded, the bank drops off severely. But, I also have never explored further up the fishing access area. With 3 little kids in tow (youngest ATT was 1 mth old) we have to choose our "spot" according to what their needs are, not what the "best" spot is.
If everyone is waded in, you will need to wade in, too, or you will not be able to safely get your line out.
Definitely wear eye protection, and a hat isn't a bad idea, either.
Dipnetting (which you can only do if you are a resident with >12mths in-state) we are out in the surf up to our chest or wherever our waders end... Some people don full wetsuits and go out much further.
When we are dipnetting, the kids are either in a tent further up on the shore, or when they are old enough, they stay by our cooler and play in the sand. While you cannot dipnet, it is DEFINITELY worth it to walk down along the shore and chat with the 'netters and watch the action. It is probably my most favorite activity in Alaska.

Just got an email from a guide we are using during this restriction period and he said that we could keep hatchery king salmon any size.

The thing about keeping king salmon is no matter what size, they count against your limit. Two a day, but there is a Yearly limit of 5.
