ignore you? heck most of the time when i signal a lane change the vehicles behind me actually speed up to block my move.

I think people are very nice when I drive through Denver. Why there is hardly a time that someone doesn't drive by me and hold up a finger to tell me that I'm #1.

Actually I have found the opposite. Traffic almost always lets me in with no issues. I figured there were lots of folks who tow out there, even if cuurently traveling only in cars.
So THANK YOU folks, for being so kind to me for the last 200,000 miles.

And if they are bullheaded and you collide with them, you are guilty of an improper lane change and pay for their damages because they maintained a position in THEIR lane.

That's entirely reasonable if within that 1/4 mile there are two or three exits.
Signaling too early could simply invite people to ignore you or pull out infront of you; as a result, I don't think signaling real early in city traffic is a good idea.
Signaling too late obviously doesn't give other drivers enough time to comply with your wishes.

Exactly what I was going to say! You have to bump the blinker off for a bit, then put it back on... it lets them know you're not just some idiot who forgot to turn off the signal.
I usually put on the signal, count 2 seconds, then move the steering wheel in the desired direction and then back again, to make them see that I'm serious and about to come over. For all they know I might not have seen them, so they cautiously back off.
One time in Alamosa I did just that, and the car on my trailer's right rear quarter moved back some, so I got into the right lane and soon made my turn into a parking lot (the reason for the lane change, I spotted the place I was looking for). The car followed me into the lot and pulled alongside. The female driver said, "you pulled in front of me!" I replied, "yes, thank you for giving me room to move over, you were very kind." That kind of flustered her.

try driving a School Bus---nobody wants to be behind one.
and if your referring about Michigan drivers in particular, I won't make a comment. I've brought my tourist dollars up there many times.

FunnyCamper wrote: must be kinder Southern drivers around me. people let us in, they slow down and just allow the lane change. People stop and wave us thru a busy, hard to get out intersection and things like that. We also are courteous driving the rig. From what I do read, don't think I am going to like venturing out of the South and driving :0 ya'll seem to have such troubles.

Ignoring the boring crazy reason for us being on the shoulder of 390 south of Rochester, when it came time to rejoin traffic, it took a while until a nice guy towing a pup moved to the left lane so we could get back on. I think most drivers are only concerned with themselves.
