Can anybody recommend a good CG close enough to Atlanta to use it as a base to tour the city?

We always stay at the KOA in Cordele on our way back from Florida.

not many campgrounds right near Atlanta but some nearby within driving distance. Jellystone in Bremen GA and Stone Mountain Family Campground. Atlanta South RV Resort in McDonough GA is another. There are also some Corps of Engineers park at Lake Allatoona.

Altoona Lake CG is run by the Army Corps of Engineers and is a beautiful CG right off 75 north of Atlanta. It beats that KOA at Cordele which was pretty run down when we stopped there for a one nighter.

I stayed here for 4 months when I was getting ready to transfer to Maryland. It is not the biggest campground, but its nice and its very close to Atlanta.. Only about 20 min ride without traffic. I highly recommend it.

I vote for Stone Mountain. You can take a bus to downtown from there. I recommend MARTA over trying to park downtown.

We've stayed at Atlanta South RV Resort a couple of times out of necessity. The owner's are great, the place is a dump; small sites on top of each other, bath houses were nasty, just not a good place to hang your hat.
I would go with Stone Mountain park.
