They also make chewable tabs that are usually 12.5mg...

In humans we use 1-2mg/kg for kiddos with allergic reactions...if you used 1mg/lb it would be a little high as there is 2.2kg in every lb.

If you had a 10 lb dog and you went by the 1mg/lb you would give 10mg
same weight dog is 4.5 kg so using the normal formula you would give 4.5mg or 9mg if you were doing the 2mg/kg.

And vets do use the same Benadryl that we use on humans--just make sure to use ONLY Benadryl not some "allergy" med as someone else mentioned.

Hope this helps

Thanks-I was able to get in contact with SIL (breeder) and she confirmed the 25 mg 2x/day.

Dr. Doug,

Jesse's already on cephalaxan (sp?-bottle is in kitchen and I'm in family room) and that helped some but he had some hot spots where he was scratching. SIL suggested betadine baths & benadryl to stop the overall itching. Both seem to already be helping. Want to get him off the antibiotic (this is his 2nd course) if possible because he's not eating well while one it.

Thanks for everyone's help!

Cephalexin can cause an upset in appetite but so can the hot spot, so if he really needs an antibiotic, perhaps switch to another (amoxicillin ??). You can use topical benedryl also. I don't have an opinion about the betadine baths (not sure it will help), it's way more important to stop the itching.

Wal-Mart has them in the 25MG pill you can break in half.

Thanks! CVS's generic isn't scored, so I wasn't sure.

Thanks Dr. Doug. I didn't realize the hot spots could cause stomach upset as well. It was my SIL who is a breeder that said the Betadine baths will not only help stop the itching but will also help prevent infection. This morning he already seems better-he's not trying to scratch nearly as much.

They used to make Benedryl in liquid form for young children who could not swallow pills. Perhaps they still do and than you could adjust the amount for very small dogs.

You can also get Benedryl (or generic) LIQUID for children. It is 12.5mg per 5mL. So each mL (or cc) = 2.5mg of Benedryl. Makes dosing A LOT easier for small dogs. So instead of busting open a pill, or giving a higher than needed dose, you can get pretty close to the 1 lb = 1 mg dosage. Use a pediatric dropper, syringe, or dump it on their food. It is quite sweet tasting, so most dogs like it.

This is what I use only i put it in a syringe (minus the needle). I keep one loaded with the correct dose in my travel pack. Makes it easy to just open their mouth and shoot it in. IMHO the liquid is absorbed faster than a pill.

When I went to the drugstore to buy a new bottle because mine was passed the expiration date, I noticed the brand name Benadryl was missing on the shelves of all the stores. I asked the pharmacist and he said Benadryl had a dosing problem and they were all pulled. Said they should be back on the market when they fix the problem.

Jesse's doing fine with generic 25 mg tablets twice a day. Hubby thinks he may actually be allergic to the antibiotic-he had one bad spot in his armpit and one on his neck when the vet prescribed it but his skin was normal. On the antibiotic his skin turned reddish and bumpy. Stopped it and he's already looking better.
