I was wondering if WY. has some sort of regulations on fuel prices. Traveled through on my way to the Tetons prices from one station to the next, just blocks away, vary by up to 20 cents or more. I noticed if you get fuel right off the interstate it really is much higher. When you travel the by-ways you never know when the next fuel station is, so you get fuel when you can. Kind of hurts when you pay $4.39 and then you pass a station a few blocks away and the price is $3.87. Just though I'd let ya'll know in case you're heading up that way.

It is that way here in Nebraska, it can vary between 2 stations owned by the same company. You have to watch certain stations in western Nebraska advertise a low price but it is just at one pump.

A lot of the difference in the fuel price is where the station gets their fuel. Some of our fuel comes out of Canada and is cheaper. In much of northwest Wy the fuel price is 3.579 right now but if you are in a big tourist area they jack the price up to what ever they can get. On I-80 prices are high but if you drop down into a local town like Rock Springs gas is quite a bit cheaper.
I don't think there are any price controls in Wyoming.

Are there any states that regulate gas prices?
While state fuel taxes produce price differences between states, with in a state prices vary with brand, competition, and distance from refinery and distribution center.

I've only heard of 2 gas price regulations. The first outlaws price gouging during natural disasters. The second only allows price changes when tanks are refilled. Of course, this may differ from 1 state to another.
This is also a good reason to stay connected while traveling. I use my laptop and an aircard to check gasbuddy.com periodically if I'm going to be off the Interstate.

Could not beleive the cheapest fuel I bought on my trip from Las Vegas to Anchorage was in Jackson Hole, WY. Granted WY has a much lower state gas tax than most, but then again it was the only place in WY I bought gas.
I've saved a lot of money using MapQuest to find the least expensive fuel.
This post is my opinion (free advice). It is not intended to influence anyone's judgment nor do I advocate anyone do what I propose.

A little history from this old man. May not have the dates exact.
When I first started to drive and buy fuel about 1962, a rule of the thumb was diesel was always half the price of regular gas. At that time regular was about 28 cents and diesel about 14 cents. The relationship stayed at that ratio until our brainyacks in DC de-regulated diesel fuel in the late 70's or very early 80's as I recall. --- Then it was up up and away for diesel. Then the next excuses to raise diesel even further came with the low and then the ultra low sulpher formulas. Now we pay for the high cost of diesel many times over, at our pump, heating, grocery store deliveries, and so on. -- Sorry, just venting.

Price variations are nothing unusual. The highest prices will almost always be along the interstate. Often driving a few blocks to a mile away from the interstate will get you prices much lower.
In Silverthorne, Colorado on I-70 There is a Shell station at the first exit west of the Eisenhower/Johnson Tunnels. This Shell station is always 40 to 50 Cents per gallon higher than the Conoco station across the street. And both stations have large signs with the prices posted. You actually see both signs in the same view if you are westbound. Go another two blocks north and one station is another 5 cents lower than the Conoco.
The gas station at Copper Mountain Resort is again 40 cents+ higher than the stations at Frisco 5 miles down the interstate. And you pay more in Vail at any station.

Not necessarily. Often it's just the opposite -- cheaper just off the interstate and higher a few blocks away. You just never know -- unless you're familiar with the stations and their pricing.
One of the cheapest places in the state is at the truck stop just off the interstate in Moorcroft. It's even cheaper in Newcastle, especially on Tuesdays -- save 10 cents per gallon at the corner station downtown. It almost makes me want to drive there every Tuesday just to fill up. It's only 150 miles round-trip.
